Those new DT wheelsets look pretty bling. Downside is that is need a superboost rear, which I it looks like they won't be doing. So any idea if they'll release the rims by themselves so I can build a set up?

The XMC 1200 has be out for 4ish years now, you’d have thought they’d have done a rim only by now, if they were going to.

XM481 are the same rim

Apart from it’s a different material...

The 240exp is available in superboost. That'd be the 'easy' way and sell the boost hub as a take off.
Not a cheap endeavour though.

Have to be honest, not a big fan of this one, 1501s didn't need carbon rims, the 1200s did that, the EXP models also don't fill me with confidence, to change to a 54t would mean removing the ring from the hub, if it's the same as the last one it's a near impossible feat for normal folk!

All my bikes have DT ratchet hubs so I was a little reticent to get a new pair with incompatible EXP free hubs but I did and they’re great. Very quiet at slow speed and progressively noisier at higher speeds.

I’d guess the XMC 1501 rims are very close to the old XMC 1200 30 rims. Everything moved pretty quickly towards lighter and cheaper in the latest generation of all things carbon wheel related.

They're 28H and carbon but thats basically where the similarity ends. Its a totally new rim otherwise.

The current 1200's use a 180 exp hub with ceramic bearings and lighter rims with a different lay-up.

The new carbon 1501's use the still pretty exceptional 240 exp and a slightly heavier rim, but they're a whole lot cheaper.

Both have the new lifetime carbon warranty now as well.

Yeah, but unfortunately the price is looking like nearly double the old 1501s, would love to keep using 1501s in the future, but getting beyond expensive now, will probably stick to making up wheels from now on.

Aren’t the new 1700’s (1900’s?) similar spec and price to the old 1501’s?

Ah, missed the “C”.

Annoyingly, DT only seem to sell the high-end 1500 series in carbon now. Shame, because the (apparently now) outdated metal EX1501s were very well-reviewed.

EDIT: Unless:

Aren’t the new 1700’s (1900’s?) similar spec and price to the old 1501’s?

So we're now saying the old EX1501s have become the new E1700? That's confusing!

1700s tend to be the 350 hubs on slightly heavier rims.

1900s are the 370s, so no ratchet system.

Just a shame DT have removed the metal option in the 1500s, will probably go 1700s in future as the 350 hub is an excellent hub as well, it's an extra 150-200 grams per wheelset, but that's not exactly going to affect me to much!

Looks like they are simplifying their full build options, which makes a lot of sense given the pointless myriad of different hub dimensions the industry has created.

Can still purchase hubs and rims, then have a good wheelbuilder put them together.

The 1700's have been upgraded to the same rims as the alloy 1501's used to use (XM481, EX511 etc) and they also come as standard with 36 tooth ratchets now.

So DT very much has still a posh alloy option, it's just moved to the 1700 range and uses 350 hubs but is also a bit cheaper than the old alloy spline 1 was.

how do you tell the difference between the new 1700 and the old? If you're shopping online for them?

Old ones had 1 letter (i.e E 1700, M 1700) new ones have 2 (EX 1700, XM 1700)

According to the way they name MTB wheels, Single letter means sleeved rim, 2 means welded, 3 means carbon (EXC's for instance).

So the new XM1700, is that now the XM481 rim?

In short..... yes, the XM1700's use the XM481

EX 1700's use the EX511
XR 1700's (the cross county ones) use the XR391.

EX and XM are 30mm wide, XR's are 25mm.

But the new carbon rim on the xmc1501 is still exclusive to the complete wheelset? Not available as a rim by itself then?

Correct, DT stopped offering their carbon rims seperately a few years back, they only offer alloy rims seperately now.

Don’t think they offer any of the carbon rimmed wheelsets rims separately.

Edit: beaten by 20 seconds...
