So this one LOOKS great at 1800 lumens claimed, any idea what sort or real life output?
Will it be brighter than my original magicshine?

Even half is optimistic. I'd expect 700-800 tops.

Still more than enough for night riding but what you have to watch for is how tight the beam is. I have some cheap XM-L's from DX and they are powerful but the internal soldering leaves a lot to be desired and the beam is very tight, not ideal for off road unless used as a second light but great on the road.

Come on Rob you know better 😉

1 led giving out 1800 lupins it's a figment of a fairies imagination

one XML led will only go over 1000 lumps in a lab and probably sat on ice .

I wonder how many people get sucked in by the ludicrous billions of lumens for pennies claims on evilbay .

Rob I cant get close to £50 for a light head with the lumens to match your existing head .

However for close to 100 beer tokens I can do you a nice 4x XPG-2 helmet light head with approx 1600 lumens coming out of the front on max

It will get hot if not moving and it will suck power from Smudges excellent cells at a fair old rate but it does have a pretty good beam and of course it will turn down in power too .
and dim itsself if it gets too warm .

I didn't get suckered by lumens as the Chinese version I bought stated 900lumens. I did laugh recently when i saw an ad for my lifht advertising these high lumen capacities although i have no knowledge in ck parison with the likes of Smudge and Trout. I went on feedback from here which was generally good for £20-25 worth of light with a downside being the wait and having to seal the batteries with a condom and zip tie.

That said I still want a v1 or v2 this year so I have customer support within the UK although a few eBay sellers are now selling DX lights for Chinese prices within the UK.

I've got one that I bought as a second light in conjunction with an Exposure MaxX D. The battery pack lives in my camelback and so far I've had no issues with it (unlike the MaxX D that cost 10 x more!). It is more focused but not a pure spot beam, I have used it alone when the maxX D has failed me. I don't know lumens but it is brighter than the exposure.

It would be comparable output wise TBH, simply because their both XML units, and if that's your main purchasing decision, you will be disappointed.

Smudges is reportedly a better constructed unit and have very reputable UK based support. LOL @ the assumption that because a eBay sellers is based in the UK, they will be able to match this, any number of UK shops failed to provide decent backup for the 'batch' of lights they bought as a one off. Though admittedly a well setup seller may do a good job, but I think you'll find most are in it to make a quick buck.

I've not compared my V1 to a DX XML in real life, but DX units often have complaints that their too focused into a spot. I'd don't find that an issue with my V1 (though it is a focused beam) but that may be down to perception.

If you want more output then you need more LED's per unit, or simply run a second light...

how would this head unit differ in output to the smudge version (V2)?

OK some of the boffins on Candlepower forums they like to test these things to destruction sometimes

here are the results of one such boffins tests for the XML led

[IMG] [/IMG]

nowhere in his report does the XML go over 1000 lumens
and 3 amps being crees maximum drive current you can see what you are going to get for your dollars.
