I have an old Alan Cross Alu frame which was converted to SS. A large stone or more correctly rock flipped up and smashed the crank arm shearing at the ring and bent the main front gear ring.
I am now wondering if it is worth converting it back to gears as the main gear ring needs changing anyway. I really like the frame and liked as a SS but thinking it would be even better with gears.
Maybe as a home project but might stick it in the LBS for the work...

Any ideas?
Is 'Alan' a famous XC manufacturer?
THE cx maker in the good old days.
well is the frame really worth paying for the extra cash for gears? I like the ride of this bike and was my default SS commuter for a few years until the 'accident'. after that it has just sat in my garage.

that's more than enough reason to keep it.
Gears/ SS, best of both, 1x9.
is 1 x 9 easy to do myself or is it a LBS job?
I have heard reports of problems with the chain slipping off the end of the cassette with 1 x 9?

then why make it heavier and more complicated more expensive.....
well chain tensioner is not the best SS solution. i have had trouble with my converted Kona cindercone (see other thread)but not so much trouble with the Alan Xcross I mist admit.
...
decided to keep it SS and replace chain ring and spider 🙂
