Looking for some general XC wheels. Would you classify Hunt XC Wide 29er wheels light at 1693gms ? They are 28mm (Front) and 26mm (rear) wide. Any feedback on these ?

I’d say sub 1500g is light for Mtb. Trail weight for the hunts. I’ve xtr hubs on wtb carbon rims(1450g)

For the rim widths I'd say they're a decent weight. But hunt do a lighter 'XC Race wheelset for £400 (currently) at a claimed 1517g.

As ever if you want fewer grams, it costs more pounds...

My 30mm allmountain/enduro lite/whatever wheels are 1250g.

They cost a bit more than the Hunts mind.

My Dura Ace C50 road wheels are about 1650g

I've had the hunt xc wheel set for 3 years.

It's had spoke pull through the rim and a free hub shatter.

Both sorted promptly by hunt under warranty.

I have a carbon rim/ novatec wheel set from king bikes on eBay that was similar money and similar weight. They are a similar age, but have had numerous uplift days and lots of rocky rides in the peaks and Wales. They have broken one spoke and I've just put a new free hub on.
£366 1666g

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275316339378?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=78auDSzORBm&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=a9M6NJdMTVq&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

The hunts have had an easy life on smooth trails locally.

When either set breaks I'll get the carbon set again.

Nothing wrong with the hunts, and the warranty has been excellent, the carbon set has been exceptional.

I think that a bit under 1700g is about as light as you'll get for a i30+/-aluminium wheelset. You'll need to go carbon for lighter. It's also worth comparing where the weight actually is as if it's in the hubs it'll have less impact than if it's in the rim.

Specialized Roval Control or SL Control look nice.

Also, is the Hunt weight claimed or actual? There are often disparities between the two.

I opted for 1700g comprising of: Stan's Arch Mk4 (i28), Bitex 211 hubs, Sapim CX Ray spokes, brass nipples. Weight includes rim tape & valves. Cost was around £550 iirc.

These are some of my recent ones:

1.35kg on Chris King boost hubs with tape and valves. CK hubs aren’t the lightest, but that difference in weight is the hub, not the spokes or rim, so it’s negligible on feel. CK hubs, Sapim CX ray spokes, Nextie carbon rims (320g, 25mm internal hookless) ~£1k(ish)

It's good for the money you're looking to spend, personally I'd be looking at the slightly lighter (1599g) Silt XC Alloy we've got two sets. both on HT's and mine have done over 1300km of XC & marathon racing plus training and bashing round the likes of Afan and CYB and they're as true and straight as the day I got them.

It's all well and good saying these are lighter etc, but if you nearly treble your budget you can get Roval Controls, DT XCR1501's etc or Hunt Proven or Silt Carbons, all lighter, stiffer and guess what, more expensive.

Depends on the price. If aluminium and under £500 they're quite light. If £1200 and carbon then there are much lighter out there.

I have some 29mm aluminium 29er wheels that cost £450 and about 1750g

Stan's crest Mk4 on Bitex with D-lights and polyax nipples should be 1.56kg with tape and valves and should be <£500 built by someone and <£400 built at home.

without wanting to hijack too much.... Hunt Proven carbon race wheels or Roval Controls?

Similar money. I hear lots of good things about the Rovals. But the Hunt are a touch cheaper and they arent far from me, so could help with any warranty issues.

I'd go for the Rovals, they're Spesh' anyway so after sales support is easy

I weighed the hunts and carbon eBay when they arrived.

They were both within a few grams of the weights on the website.
