Well.. it's up and running, but could do with a few tweaks to make it better. I built this on a fairly strict budget as I sold 3 other bikes to get the cash.

Toyed with the idea of buying a complete bike, but in the end I chose to just build (I enjoy the building aspect).

The frame was one of those German bargains that never get mentioned and the rest of the parts were spares I had or eBay/second hand.

The two things I will be changing on pay day are the tyres and the chain ring. The tyres that are on at the moment (Conti Race King 2.2) are very fast rolling, but aren't supposed to be tubeless and can feel a bit fragile. They don't hold air for more than a day before they start to go soft.

I'm toying with the idea of either fitting the double rings on the front, or getting a bigger single oval. I find it a bit under geared and spend most of the time in the bottom 3 cogs at the moment.

No doubt I'll be looking at nicer wheels and possibly a seat post in the future, but for now it's one of the best bikes I've owned so far!

It'll be doing some marathons and maybe a couple of XC races this year 🙂

Nice! It's very satisfying building up a bike as you get to fit exactly what you want. I've done three now. I find that the faffing about deciding what bits to fit takes longer - or maybe that's me.

I think I'd have gone with either black or orange grips though.

P.S. I think you mean the top three cogs 😉

I think you have my old sofa. Did you get from a couple of Vietnamese exchange students?

Yeah, top/bottom whatever 🙂

The bits for this build were relying on winning bids to be honest. The Reba was the only suitable fork on eBay within budget at the time! managed to win it for £140!

I got red grips thinking the orange bit of the frame was called "flash red". When I looked again, it was called "flash orange".

The couch is getting on for 9 years old and is still in one piece! It was new at the time, but I didn't ask what nationality the sales person was 🙂

£140 for a Reba is a bloody good price. Colours - look twice, buy once! As for the couch ...

I'm the least colour coordinated person going to be honest 🙂

I thought I'd include the couch because I don't have any grass to offer up for criticism hehe.

Out of all the stuff I bought for the build, I reckon the fork was the best bargain (and I'm terrible at getting bargains)!

Hi John, im in the process of building the very same bike.

Where did you get the rear axle from? My frame came pretty bare and i have had to borrow an axle from a different bike.

Thanks

@breninbeener

When I bought the frame from Bike Discount, I added all the other stuff to my basket too (rear axle, BB, headset and seat collar).

The axle is a DT Swiss RWS x12 I think?

Was the cheapest I'd seen one too.

lovely!

Nearly finished my cube stereo 140 sl build, same as you bought frame at an amazing price from bike discount.

Got one of these axles from bike24

Chunky or Extra chunky grips John? I have just gone over to these in chunky flavour, no more sore hands. Nice build its very satisfying isn't it.

They are chunky. I tried a pair of extra chunky on the Hightower and found them to be too thick (and I've got fairly big hands too).

I always seem to go back to these ESI grips, they are just a bit of a bastard to remove if you ever have to 🙂

ESI grips slip off with GT85 and a flat screwdriver underneath.

They stick on with carpet spray glue.

Yeah, I've taken a few off with alcohol and a small, long allen key. I'm just a bit ham fisted and end up scratching the bars 🙁

I still don't enjoy it...
