Hi - new to the forum and looking for some help please.

I am building a custom built XC bike from a Claude Butler frame. The reason for this is it used to be my hardtail before my full sus days and I loved it. It's still a fantastic frame so it has been completely stripped and sprayed.

I have purchased so far;

Ritchey xc race wheels
Raceface stem and bars
Thompson post
Fizik seat

I need help with the drivetrain. I want to go 2x9 but am wondering what. I have seen some group sets for good money but is there anything in particular I need to consider bearing in mind my intentions of xc racing? I am keen on shimano slx?

Thanks

Why not 2x10? Wider range, shifts better and with the new shadow plus mechs it holds the chain better. Should be able to get a whole slx groupset for 300.

What he said ^^. I'd go xt though for less weight and more snap to the change. I got 28/40 upfront, with a 36/11 cassette for riding here in the SE and it works well.

How cheap do you need it? Germany is the place for these- often arrives quicker than CRC!

I'd go XT but if it's a spare bike SLX is good. 9 speed is old technology now and 10 speed is a big improvement.

JE James are doing the SLX kit with brakes for £399 too which is a good deal.

Thanks.

Had seen the JE James deal, like the idea of brakes being included.

Have many used the Germany company? Prices seem very reasonable?

Hundreds, they're fine.

I'd go 2x10 if you're starting fresh, but wouldn't upgrade if you already have 9 speed kit. 28/40 are nice ratios for racing IMO, but depends on your fitness, local riding etc.

Would say fitness is good without being cocky.

Locals trails are Cannock chase and lady bower. Do some duathlons and tri's but specifically want to do xc mtb racing too.

If I go 2x10, do I need to then decide what ratio of teeth I need on the rings?

If your fitness is good go 1x10. Lighter, cheaper, simpler. 36t ring, 11-36 block.
