for those running it can you do me a quick favour (if your a mechanic in a shop with a xx1/x01 that would be great!), shift down into 11th cog (smallest), and see the mech rocks back and forth from where it attaches to the mech hanger/frame or whether it is completely solid
new bike is having shifting issues, and when in 11th cog my rear mech seems to have play back and forth (maybe just not tightened the t25 bolt that attaches to the frame sufficiently?)
is this normal or should it indeed be rock solid and not move?
its also attempting to jump gears over every single bump (and this movement im guessing creates slack in the chain), but only further down the cassette as the chain is much looser (than in 42cog)
Just had a quick look at mine (XX1) and it's solid, there's no play anywhere.
No, not rock solid. It feels like the mech hanger is loose but it's definitely in the mech as you describe. As per the other threads I believe this is very normal (or at least not uncommon!).
What I've noticed is that adjusting the limit screws with the chain on has very little effect on the mech position since the chain tension tends to "centre" the mech where the chain wants it to sit (does that make sense???). Adjusting the limit screws does affect shifting quality as you'd expect though and I do this with the chain off and moving the mech by hand. In the smallest cog the jockey is a few mm outboard of the smallest cog centre line as per the SRAM instructions. I'd like to move it slightly more outboard but the frame prevents further movement of the mech. Interestingly, I get better shifting with the mech set up slightly inboard of the biggest cog too rather than in line.
thanks folks, ok sounds like mine DanW like the mech hanger is loose is how id best describe it too, once you shift further up the cassette and chain gets taught that movement compeltely disappears!
so it sounds like its maybe been setup up ok in that respect at least
possibly just down to the b-limit screw then, not really sure what else it could be, as it shifts ok back up the cassette, but is rather quite noisy in 6,7,8,9,10 and especially 11th gear
just thought maybe the mech should be solid (although notmyrealname says is his :/ )
Try adjusting the limit screws too, even if the adjustments don't seem entirely logical and everything looks good by eye. A 1/4 turn is the difference between a very noisy and very quiet cassette for me. Also, as per the previous threads, XX1 seems sensitive to cable tension so a good clean of the cables works wonders. I've also found increasing the cable tension makes shifts both up and down the sprocket slicker 😕
