As per the title.

On eBay I ordered a factory refurbished Garmin 530 from a seller who seems to sell a lot of them.

Now it’s arrived, they’ve sent me a 1030 plus.

WWSTWD?

Assuming bigger numbers mean better, I'd keep it.

Assuming you'd tell them if it was a 'lesser' model to the one you'd ordered, then the same. Tell them. If they tell you to keep it, happy days. If not, still good karma and all that stuff

I'd fess up, but I don't think you're obliged to, an there's nothing they can do to make you pay any more or demand that you return it.

You don't ask this question because there's morally only one right answer.

Same happened to me with a different gadget, I told them and offered to return it, then decided I'd prefer it and asked how much extra it was, they gave me a decent deal.

I am considering a new Garmin, where did you get it from?

Remember that there more than a high chance of some poor bugger opening their new 1030 to find a 530 inside...

I would contact them and let them know they’ve made a mistake, see what they want to do. What’s the price difference between the two, and if it were a bit cheaper would you have bought the 1030?

I’m a big believer in always doing the right thing, it costs nothing to be a decent human being.

I would tell them

If you made such a costly mistake you would appreciate someone telling you

You know it's not yours - to keep it may be not just morally wrong but a breach of the law

They may tell you to keep it in which case,.conscience clear it's yours

Those of you who said keep it should take a good long look in the mirror.

Keep it then have a look in the mirror at your smiley smug face.
Then put a link on here and give them a boost!

Those hinting at some moral obligation to return it are wide of the mark.  The law says these are "unsolicited goods" and you're well within your rights to keep them. You don't have to tell anyone, nor send them back and the co can't make you pay for them. It's their cock-up. End.

Remember that there more than a high chance of some poor bugger opening their new 1030 to find a 530 inside…

And has nothing to do with you, this is for the co and the other bugger to sort out between them.

Oh that’s alright then. Keep it, look smugly at yourself and repeat the words ‘ you’re well within your rights to keep them’. 😏 < smug emoji apparently! Everyone’s a winner  👍

edit: Nice one Kramer.

Haven’t they started striking off doctors for just sticking up for the future of humanity? They might start spreading their web of thought control…

You're confusing morality and law.

I did this (not with bike stuff, but RC car stuff)

They may tell you to keep it in which case,.conscience clear it’s yours

They did this (IIRC i paid about 1/4 of the difference, about 100-120 quid). So i now have two matching chassis, instead of one "full feature" pro spec and one base spec.

I'd tell them personally but companies can be very different in their response.

I ordered a pair of gloves for a Christmas present, told they were out of stock and wouldn't be with me in time. Offered a refund, which I took and gloves turned up. Let the company know, not even a thank you.

Ordered a new bike and a longer stem to go with it. Bike arrived with stem but the wrong stem, one which was twice the price. Let them know, they told me to keep it so I could enjoy my new bike sooner.

Just had a message back saying that it was a free upgrade, and thanking me for being honest.

Off to fiddle with it on the bike now.

You can now proudly say that you had a free upgrade rather than saying you were grubby lucky.

If you run into any issues with it, you're not getting any support as the seller thinks they sent you a 530...

I'd contact the seller - you never know they might tell you to keep it. If not then they should be organising a swap to the 530 at no cost to you as it is their mistake.

I believe it works both ways and all works out in the end, and karma comes back round - for instance I recently bought a bike with a missing wheel end cap and the retailer then sent a brand new wheel rather than just an end cap. I offered to return the faulty wheel and they said to keep it and sell it!

I know it's already sorted, but as someone who has more than once put the wrong address labels on eBay sales it's really appreciated to get in touch and sort it out.

Bear in mind that it's a bigger unit, so if at some point you wanted to mount it on your top tube behind the stem with the 76 Projects mount, you may end up knocking it off with your knees.

However, looking yesterday they’re not offering 530s any more, only 1030+s at a higher price.
