Thinking all the main dificulties in my new Blue Pig build were behind me I popped into a local bike shop to buy a star nut as my headset did not come with one. The fella sorted me out and I measured many times, took a deep breath and cut the steerer. With a light heart on seeing I'd cut it straight (used an upside down stem as a guide) I cleaned up and popped the nut into place ready to whack it in with a socket. Suprise! It slides down the steerer. It's a few mm shy of being a tolerence fit and I told the LBS it was for a 1 1/18th steerer so I guess there must be different sizes for different wall thicknesses.
FYI it's to fit a TALAS 36 tapered steerer.
I'll go back to a shop (probably not this one again) with the offcut to get one that does fit, so this is more a mini rant than a question, but I am interested in knowing what the 'standard' is here?
Did you def get a star nut, and not an expanding bolt? I didnt know there were any other sizes of star nut
Definitely a star nut for a 1 1/8th steerer, and not a 1" steerer?
Yeah, he's given you a 1" one...
What a plonker! Last time I went into that shop about a year ago they sold me a Deore 9 speed cassette for about £60. I took it back the next day when I realised I'd been diddled (was new to mtb then). As I was working locally I thought surely they could sort me out a star nut without any bother.
