Since it's been raining tons Wharncliffe has got pretty sloppy slide. I've been wondering about a specific mud tire like the warden. Has any one ever tried its and what's it like running a tire like that over mud but also wet roots and rocks?
Probably worth looking at the Verdict / Verdict wet too.
I like the look of the standard Verdict as a winter tyre with a Judge out back but that combination would come with an increase in weight of almost 1lb compared to my current Eliminator BLCK DMND and Hillbilly combo.
I had/have some 27.5 ones for chalky slimy roots conditions.
i really liked them and gave me a lot more confidence than the previous tyres I’d tried.
panaracer muds, specialized storm controls.
I've now used a few modern wtb’s and quite like them all.
they're now languishing unused as I’m all about 29ers now. Shoot me a message and I’m sure we could work something out.
I've had a pair of 26" Wardens in my shed for ages (were very cheap).
I used them on Sunday at a very muddy Pedalhounds in Penshurst.
Initially I was worried about the lack of volume, they do come up skinny.
I'd say theyre a tyre for the sort of conditions I wouldn't normally ride in unless a race or event.
Sidewalls were a bit leaky but the grip was awsome. Didn't notice an issue on the roots.
Each time after hitting a sloppy bit I thought i could have got away with braking less. I'm not sure about overall speed, they felt draggy on the hardpack but the old 26er doesn't pedal as well as my Aeris.
I was that impressed I ordered a 650b set.
£18ish on CRC
As above. I'm not a serial tyre changer. Ran a cheap 26" Warden on the back for the first six months of this year until it wore out after 2100km. Very grippy on, well, everything, but predictably draggy on long XC days. Odd profile compared to tyres of a nominally similar size - narrower, but taller, if that makes sense. Not a true all rounder, but a decent winter tyre.
Warden is great for sloppy conditions.
Not as good as a Mud King though.
How do they compare to magic Mary's?
Very different tyres. The Warden is a mud tyre, narrow with tall spikes.
I used a pair basically all last winter riding the offpiste trails near Petersfield. They defs gave grip when others were struggling. Makes a Maxxis Shorty look like a fast rolling tyre though!
Mine also took a few days to settle and stop leaking with the tubeless but after that they were fine.
I found them fine over roots as you'd have a bit more control going in and coming out of a root section, but they did feel rather 'squirmy' on anything fast and hard packed.
