I am looking to convert to tubeless. Has anyone done this with these rims? Just trying to determine if all I need is valves and sealant or if I will need tape as well

25mm Tesa tape off ebay and some valves & sealant

Two loops of tape works best IME

I'm just about to do the same on i45's. You'll need tape as well. I'm going to use the Gorilla repair tape as recommended by firestarter who used the same for his i45's.

Do you have a link to the particular one mate? There are quite a few different ones

WTB recommend 5mm more than the internal rim width. I’ve used these rims numerous times and run them tubeless. I’ve found the best thing is 30mm gorilla tape from the hardware store

So does the tape come up 2.5mm either side of the rim?

Actually I'd try the Gorilla tape as fudge says, if WTB recommend 5mm wider tape.

Normal tubeless tape is a bit stiffer and would a mare to stick down.

What fudge said ^

Just rip it a couple of mm wider that the gap when offered up to the rim. The last two I've done like that have sealed without sealant! Why I faffed about with specific tubeless tape for so long, I'll never know. So much easier with good Gorilla tape. And before anyone points out the gunk / residue issue, meths or similar lifts it pretty easily.

@frozenwhite-bloke:

hey - how is weather up in the north?
rain and snow and ice and crap and storm?

Perfect for biking...*
😯
(*o.k. - that's the reason you do some Gorilla tape session in the basement right now...?)

Yeah. I have about 3 inches of snow up my way. Still not been out yet. As soon as the weather clears I have arranged a trip with a couple of guys in work who are regular riders to Glentress which has some pretty laid back trails so should be ideal for getting a feel for the bike. I ended up swapping mine. Picked up a Large on Christmas Eve. I didn't get a chance to properly sit on it and get a feel for it until last week. When I did I just felt it was a bit on the big side. I spoke to them and they swapped it no problem as it hadn't been ridden so I now have a Medium. I was originally going for a medium but the guy talked me in to a large when I was buying it. My fault for not trying the medium at the time but all sorted now

No. Some of the additional width is taken up by following the contour of the rim well.

Ideal. Actually struggling to find the 30mm gorilla tape online

To swap to M sounds right then. Biked for some time an MTB which was too large. Wasn't fun at all.

Ha. Good. I train a lot biking alone. But most fun are the weekend trips with my biking pals.
Lets hope spring will show up soon!!!

Cheers!

Planet X have a blue Jobsworth branded tape at £1 a roll right now that’s much the same as Tesa 4282, Stans or WTB.

+1 on +5mm width over ID. It’s what WTB recommend and has worked well on my i25’s, i29’s and i35’s.

I’m going to buck the trend on tape choice though and suggest a single wrap of hard plastic tape (the above) the right width over Gorilla. Gorilla is thicker, heavier (ok weightweenie problem) and prone to soaking up the goop leading to a messier cleanup than you need if/when you retape. I’ve used it successfully but I view it as an emergency escape route rather than a good default option.

I wonder if the 28mm would be ok for the i25's

I've bought some Tesa tape off ebay to convert my i25's to tubeless - think it's 20mm I got, couldn't find 30mm at anything reasonable. Was thinking of just taping the spoke-holes in the well but I do have enough tape to put a couple of runs to fill the entire rim bed if needed.
