Hello, Mid Sept I had a low speed sideways fall at CYB and hurt my wrist. It felt better after a days rest and I rode BPW and FOD without issues a few days after. Over time it got worse but I ignored it and carried on riding and gyming. Decided to rest when the gyms closed again in Oct.
A couple of weeks ago I had another crash and really hurt it. I've seen a physio who couldn't find an issue and thought it was a bone injury, I've had an X-ray which shows no damage to the Distal radius or Scaphoid. GP is referring me for an MRI now.
Internet self diagnosis has me thinking its Wrist Tenosynovitis/De Quervain's Tenosynovitis as the description of the symptoms are the closest match to what hurts.
I have it immobillised using tubigrip and a ruler. Its bloody painful and the slightest thing can hurt it.
Anyone have experience of this they can share? How long was the recovery/what was prescribed.
Thanks
I would be interested by what the physio said thinking it was maybe a bone injury. They are good at diagnosing soft tissue injuries and something must have caused them to think bone. I would be concerned about an occult scaphoid fracture and subsequent avascular necrosis. The MRI may help with this.
ultrasound, thanks for your response. scary stuff. I hope it's not those.
Physio worked on the snuffbox and that didn't hurt at all. He didn't say why as I recall just that there was a possiblilty of the bone being bruised.
I had tenosynovitis in the past. Its odd and made all the tendons in the back of my hand and up my wrist itchy and feel like they were on fire. I also had a hard fall onto my hip a couple of years ago - nothing showed on x ray but had bruising for a while - was determined that had bruised the bone - took about 6-9 months, but eventually healed itself. Could be something like that if you banged it hard?
matthewlhome, thanks for your input. My symptoms do not match your description so I am rethinking the tenosynovitis.
Bone bruising and the scary stuff ultrasound mentions now I've read up on them seem more likely.
Had this due to an extended kayaking trip that I simply wasn't fit enough to undertake. Wrist was audibly creaking like a rusty door hinge. I was due to go to work a few days later so used my employers private health care to see if I could get it sorted. The consultant took one look & explained what was going on. Rest was the answer in my case. With a bit of looking after it was useable again a week later.
It's interesting that your GP has sent you for the MRI as well. An ultrasound would be easier to get done and would diagnose a tenosynovitis there and then. Fingers crossed for a good outcome and sorry if I sounded doom and gloom!
I was diagnosed as having tenosynovitis and it was grating of the tendon on top side of wrist, put two fingers opposite hand on tendon and clench fist you feel the grating
Seve Ballesteros used to suffer due to the divot rebound
Rest for two weeks from gp or in 6 months time you will struggle to do anything with that arm
To the OP, have you checked 'intersection syndrome' as a possibility as well? I lived in the USA for a while, and through my piano playing work I got an acting job where I had to wear a strappy dress and high heels (in men's size 13) and chop down an oak tree with an axe. Due to me not normally chopping trees down with axes, and the fact they got it for 20 bucks off Amazon, it took bloody ages. The next day my wrist squeaked like a little mouse and I could barely grab a doorhandle.
Due to no health insurance I self-diagnosed and treated. Not sure I did exactly the right thing, but I basically filled the freezer with water bottles every day, and every day immersed my forearm and wrist/hand in a flower window box full of ice water for about 20 minutes while reading. During day splinted it. Didn't want to go the cortisone injection route.
I thought my piano career was over! I reckon the ice regime probably brought the inflammation down...I think what happens is the tissues get inflamed then rub on each other so get inflamed so rub more etc. etc.
PS. I had a crash years ago and was told no bone damage just bruising every time I went to doctor, but months later got an MRI that revealed my hamate bone was cracked in two and the jaggedy bits were grating on the nerves. That's why it hurt I guess..but I think some wrist fractures are super hard to spot off X-Rays.
If it doesn't settle (and isn't AVN), see if you can find someone who does shockwave therapy. It's working well for one of my clients who has suffered with this for a while.
I had DQT from gardening impacts digging. Swollen tendons rubbed in the sheaths and you could hear them and feel them rubbing. Rest cured it. Topical steroid cream or ibuprofen gel may be helpful for the inflammation.
Thanks everyone for your input.
I have rested it completely for the last 2 days, and have been icing it for 20 mins at a time every few hours. Its not improved and if anything its worse. I'll have to speak to the GP again.
