Yeah, I'd give it a try.

Been over the wheels/halfway up the headtube before passing through a flood.

Yep, I would too - this is a road near a regular riding spot, it's been like this for weeks - hub deep or just over for part of the way.

Yep I would. I’d be a little nervous about displaced manhole covers if it was an urban area, but it looks fairly rural so you’d probably be alreet.

Depends how much further of a ride I've got and what the temperature is like. I really struggle with my extremities and keeping them warm, if I was almost home then yeah probably because I know I'd be dry soon but if I had ages to go and knew an easy enough way round then no probably not.

If I knew lane and it wasn't freezing, maybe on fatbike, no chance on road bike.

These pictures remind me of a lane we cycled along near Colne, Lancs. It’s a ford crossing but you have to ride along the lane/river for about 50 metres or so. Took us a couple of minutes to work it out.😁

Been on that - almost better when there's water flowing as it's a bit slippery algae otherwise.

For those not local it's here - https://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=390657&Y=441732&A=Y&Z=115 Not so much a ford as " a river runs through it"

Ahh yes, to add a clause to my answer - yes, but only if I had waterproof socks. Knee length sealskinz socks are brilliant.

That Cockhill Lane nr Colne is mental. On Google maps when you go to the Streetview it turns into the river and then just stops. The driver obviously thought bollox to that, not paid enough 😃

Which streetview are you looking at? This one drives right through...

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.8719749,-2.1432226,3a,75y,234h,85.9t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s8dWEh924jFiothIRb6gvpQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en-GB

Also, you call that a river thinking it's a road?

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/ @51.2004321,1.1550251,3a,75y,197.23h,87.42t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s9xzBUicqo9IaV8hgUZwHig!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en-GB

Yeah, yeah, I know it's not a permanent feature, the river is a 'ghost' river and only flows sometimes, but that road IS the riverbed - it's not flooded over the top, it's where it is meant to flow.

Yep. I rode down a few flooded roads on my fixed gear bike with 30c tyres 2 weeks ago. The water was above my bottom bracket height but my feet were already soaked as I can't stop pedalling.

Went very slowly though and armed myself to fall off as hitting a pothole that you can't see doesn't usually go well (especially on fixed gear where going over the bars happens pretty quickly if at 15mph - pothole causes a stop of pedalling, stop of pedalling = over the bars)

Worse part was that my shoes took a week to dry out.

Having done the Abhainn Strath na Sealga crossing I don't remember a road leading to it. It's often more like this -

strath na sealga crossing

As long as I can see the verge as an indication of how deep it is going to get. Depends on conditions and knowledge of where the road goes, likelihood of it getting too deep, washed out bridge etc.
I probably would if it was a fun ride and or wasn't going to be staying in the same clothes and could have a shower after as I'm not too keen on flood water because of all the dead stuff and raw effluent.

qwerty's pack in that photo had me confused for a second - reminded me of this

qwerty’s pack in that photo

Error... that's most definitely not me!!! That's the 2019 HT550 winner blazing his way through the grey damp gloom, all electronic eyes were on him to see if he'd make the crossing. The kahunas he dangles are clearly rather large.

Do it.

Fell off the side of a similar road in December. Front wheel dropped and I put my foot down into nothing: ended up fully-immersed. Thankfully my "mates" took photos rather than helping:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/nRLGFfk1tvCvtHdF6

The kid standing nearby died laughing - I made his day.

My old road club - Herts Wheelers - used to run (and may still do) an Amphibian Challenge.

Five local fords, in both directions. 5 attempts, losing a point for a dab etc. Some were slimetastic and one went on forever. Last one resulted in a complete immersion for me and my road bike. That was a cold ride home 🙂

Yup. If you don't come back soaked and covered in mud, well you just haven't enjoyed yourself enough.

Wet feet ?, thankfully skin is waterproof.

Ancient handy tip for deep crossings.

Carry the bike upside down.

That helps keep water out of the important mechanical bits.

Unlikely, overhaulling the bearings is more hassle than the ride would be fun

Sure.

At least on a bike you can just turn round, that's a bit more tricky in a car.

Almost weekly occurrence where I live, no problem at all on a road bike, just don’t pedal in circles, you get wet feet

Most of the time no, nor would I drive through it. Though..

When Devon flooded badly a few years back we rode our usual route. Parts were unrideable, too deep, too fast, unknown. One part up to head tube, made it but we found we could barely pedal that deep and you wouldn’t go far. Another part the concern was the current. All a great adventure but full bike strip down was required.
