So has anyone registered for the STW Hebden Bridge event tomorrow (13th Oct), knowing they cannot attend, simply to be in the draw to win the Specialized fatbike? 😆

so, assuming I am going to live in/near the Alps and I will have an 11-42 rear cassette, should I go for a 28 or 30 tooth front? (I'm 80kgs and reasonably fit, but beginning to enter the world of being considered middle aged...)

28. I have a 30 and rarely need a higher top gear.

There's no point having all that grip if you can't exploit a fatty's climbing abilities.

indeed - i plan to do some multi-day trips too, so i imagine carrying a tent etc might require a low gear... (i can keep the 22/36 plate that comes with the bike of course...)

thanks everyone!

Oval is really nice on a fatbike ime- I'm never sure if it's really doing anything worthwhile performance wise but seated in a low gear can feel very blobby, it just feels nicer without that. So I have IIRC a 28T oval but I don't ride up alps with it

I'm now the proud owner of a Calibre Dune.

Not the biggest deal but what colour schemes have people gone for rim strip wise? Colour coded or colour clash?

And once more for the stoopid, if I buy an Aeffect 100/170 crank, exactly which ring do I need to buy if I want to flip it?

Also, I've been following this thread from the start and have yet to read about a broken one, has anybody managed it?

I think colour coded or clash works, I'm going clash just for the heck of it.

You want one of these: http://www.tredz.co.uk/.absoluteBLACK-RaceFace-Cinch-Direct-Mount-Oval-Chainring-6mm-Offset_91942.htm?sku=321167&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=google_shopping&gclid=CM-lrLaI1s8CFawp0wodhA0GuQ#

And flip it

Colour coded here- yellow PVC tape, it doesn't quite have the pop of the frame but it's not far off.

I've upped the stakes by drilling a hole in the seattube for a Reverb, on mine. Lets see what happens 😆

You've beaten me to it, seriously tempted to drill my frame for my Thomson. Only thing holding me back is that I really like my Spesh remote lever I'm running with my KS (not compatible with Thomson)

Has anyone fitted minion fbf and fbr tyres to a dune?

I thought I'd seen something about them earlier in the thread but can't find it now, I'm sure the front will fit fine and I think northwind is running a 4.8 JJ at the rear so it should be ok but I don't really want to spend that much and possibly have trouble returning one if theres no clearance once fitted.

I havent tried them but am keen to give them a go at some point. I think they'd fit ok - if you have trouble returning in sure you could sell privately for near as damn it as they arent the easiest to get hold off IIRC

4.8 FBR is a wee bit smaller than the 4.8 JJ, fits really well with my x1. I like it tbh, it's faster and not as grippy as I was expecting but still good- it just seems to lack a little toothiness compared to the FBF.

I'd like to try the FBF on the rear too but I'm not paying for another one 😆 Waiting to see how it copes with proper winter.

I'm seriously thinking about one for the front as i have a Lou coming for the rear.
I did ask the question previously

Northwind-
FBF is great in mud but oddly, not as good up front as a Floater in snow, in my limited experience.
I had one ride on a new FBF up the Sidlaws this past April and was surprised at its lack of stability straight ahead in the new, fairly wet snow. I'd expected those big teeth to work as well as they do in peaty mud. If we do get a proper winter, I'll probably swap back to the Floater for a few months, which I've always found copes ok in the same situation.

I've probably asked before but how are they in the slideways department? I.e do they wash out entering mud patches at speed?

Got the Dune, very impressed with it(apart from the short seatpost), but what does everyone take for a pump with them out on the trails? After adding some stans to the tubes I used a car foot pump in the garage as the track pump was taking ages..... Am I going to have to start wearing a Camelbak again to fit my foot pump in ?

Looking at the price of them, I'll probably just carry a few 16g ones 8)

Is there enough gas in a 16g cartridge to pop the beads?

I just carry a topeak frame pump and spare tube, takes a long long time to get to 8psi though 😆

How wide? I run 4.8s (JJ or Minion), so far they're better for everything I do, but there might be other stuff they're worse at.

First go on my Dune today, it's been upgraded with SLX brakes, reverb, bar/stem and 1x10 & Floaters.
It rides like a bike but with rigid forks. It needs a 30t chainring at the very least and tubeless once my 3M stuff arrived. Overall I liked it, hopefully I'll love it once it's fully sorted.

What 3M stuff did you go for? I'm waiting for some 'backer rods' to arrive and I've read about 3M ' tanelised strapping tape ' (its blue) being pretty much the same stuff as Stans tubeless tape but available in 45mm widths. Can't seem to find it anywhere in the U.K. though.

Four Vee8s? 😯

I appreciate the price of ~£12 each is nice for fat tyres, but they aren't that light and they apparently self steer unless you inflate them to ~30+ PSI (which is fine for tarmac commuting like I do, albeit much more rolling resistance than JJs, but not so good off-road when low pressure is fatbikes' big advantage).

http://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/fat-bike-reviews/veerubber-vee-8-2016

Inflating them up to 50 PSI sounds insane, it's hard enough work pumping JJs to ~30! 😆

But I guess they could be useful sacrificial lambs and they will strengthen your legs a bit more. 😉

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131428818378

Slimjim - ordered this in red as the rim strip. I'll then be going with gorilla tape and backer rods.
Although my mate managed with just gorilla tape on the standard Dune rims with Floaters using the airline at the tyre place next to his shop.

Should fit, the Bud does and I think Lou is slightly smaller on the knobs.

It's actually pretty cool IMO, the Surly carcass is pretty stretchy so as you inflate the tyre it grows much more than most- so with my Bud in the rear of the Dune, it was fine for riding and had clearance to spare, but when I pumped it up higher (20psi I think) to bead it up, it grew so much that it jammed in the frame.

Would love a Bud but cant find a 4.8. Managed via MTBR to find a US shop having a sale but delivery worked
out at $183!! Emailed them Sunday and still haven't had a reply
I'll give it a couple more weeks but i'm thinking 4.8 FBF

NW - what's the best all round F&R combo you've hit upon so far?

I'm waiting for all my tubeless gubbins to arrive and am thinking of prepping the bike for winder (snow!!) and the muddy trails that will soon be overdue - so want to try going wider up front, - and possibly out back - but don't want to be getting jammed up. Would like to keep the weight down if poss too

TBH mate it's too subjective, and I've just not used enough tyres to really say... But I like the Minions, they're great trailbike tyres. The FBR could be grippier but it's still good. I used an FBF/JJ4.8 all summer and now on FBF/FBR.

I think I've posted this elsewhere in the thread but, the Buds were actually grippier than the Minions. But I didn't like the feel. Minions have less grip- or more exactly, the carcass rebounds faster so they don't glom onto the ground as nicely- but a much livelier ride and a lot more feedback- Bud grips harder but is hard to trust because I just didn't really know what it was doing, when it was going to grip or slide... I'd rather have the consistency and transparency.

How does the FBR measure up? If coming in around 4.5 I guess it's a good fit on the Dune?

Much the same. So yeah, nice fit in the dune, bit more clearance. I can do some pics if you like, that's what's in it now.

(The Bud was fairly tight in the back but because it didn't really scoop up mud, it worked fine)

Anyone got recommendations for snow tyres? Currently have Husker Dus.

Like the look of the Flow & Dunder beists but at £140 each 😯 they might be a little too expensive for limited use. The other option might be Maxxis Mammoths.

That is a good price. Although im leaning towards FBF/FBR based on feedback on this thread..

Anyone know which compound FBF/R is best for running tubeless? (lighter weight is what im looking for)

Also, NW, did you run 4.8's on the standard Dune rims before you switched? How did they fair?

They were spot on tbh, they're 80mm rims so they're fine with wide tyres. Heavy but decent (it's been mentioned a few times in the thread but the Dune rims are the same as the On One Emmenthal wheelset and seem to be the same basic estrusion as the Halo Tundra, just with different cutouts)

I hate to say this but it depends on the snow 🙂

I'm pretty happy with Nates but a knobbly tyre isn't always best as you'll get additional rolling resistance cutting through a crust rather than rolling over the top of it. Have a look at an Endomondo to see what an alternative snow-specific tread pattern could be.

From memory you should be able to see the join, you need to get a thin screwdriver or similar in there and lever them apart working around the circumference

What pressure's that at? That's way less clearance than I had with the Bud but they're growthy tyres so at higher pressures it jammed solid, at riding pressures it was fine.

What tyres for snow? Depends on conditions - I had Dillinger 5s at this year's Rovaniemi 150 and still ended up walking for nearly 100km as it was knee-deep in places 8O. Just got a Snowshoe 2XL (biggest tyre currently available) to play with to check clearances - plan will be to run them with 100mm for maximum float and grip. If riding groomed trails in sub-zero conditions, most tyres work OK

Thanks Holyzeus, call me Scottish, but hell will freeze over before I agree to spend £75 on a single tyre (not that I'm convinced a Bud would fit my Wazoo with either the default fork or the Fatty Carbon one). My pair of JJs cost £5 more than that in the Easter Ebay 20% promo.
