I've done all the rear bearings but not had any bother with the freehub- it's a pretty common design tbh, is there any visible damage or wear?
Interesting to see how you get on with spares, that's one place this could be a bit tricky...
One of the pawls doesn't return properly, you have any idea what other freehubs or pawls would fit it?
I'll keep you posted about the spares, cause I've complained about all the bearings in general
No idea- it's the same basic design as a Stout but my old stout freehub doesn't fit. There's some novotecs with the same design but again, not identical.
Hopefully not repeating old news, but for those of you within travelling distance of a Go Outdoors store with stock (no delivery option now), you can get a Calibre Dune for ~£493 with an Easter 15% off the discount card promo!
I've had a ~£450 Voodoo Wazoo for just over six weeks which I've enjoyed so far, but I so wish I had thought more about the Dune (for its tapered headset; the more modern hub sizes; through axles; Jumbo Jim tyres etc.) with a 400mm seatpost and SLX hydraulic brake upgrade.
Attention Caliber Dune owners!
I've found a rear mech hanger that fits, the Scott Big John appears to be the same frame.
I've bought and tested one from here:
https://www.westbrookcycles.co.uk/scott-big-jon-replacement-derailleur-hanger-p298404
You just need to swap across the black end cap.
Thanks Nick, haven't broken mine yet but its bound to happen !1
They cheap enough and always good to keep a spare with ya
Just a quick heads up. On One floaters have 40% off so only £15 at the minute!
For all the fatties out there!
Anyone replaced the bottom bracket bearings yet on a Dune? Mine are a little bit noisy after the Battle on the Beach and stripped them down to find 17mm(ID)X31mm(OD)X10mm(Width) bearings fitted. Quick Google search and the only one's I can find are cheap Ebay one's from China.
Has anyone gone 2x10 on the Dune yet? Lots of 1x10 posts but I like the granny ring.
Tempted to try and see but wanted to ask before I blow £180 on the setup, I'm presuming the front much will work regardless of chain rings..
Rezis, I know one person changed the chain rings to XT 10 spd ones and it was fine.
I am changing mine to 2x10 this weekend.XT/SLX mix full details below, but I have not included the new gear ratios. I will also hopefully have a new hanger from go outdoors and a scott one both due tomorrow, as BOTB killed my re-bent one.

Hmm, same here. That's just weird tbh, why use an oddball size?
Dlovett you want the Schwalbe 26x3 freeride tubes @ 180g a piece.
Thanks Duncan, CRC are still doing the 1x10 transmission for about £150 XT/SLX. The RaceFace chainrings I was gong to buy are OOS at the moment tho 🙁
hey crashtestmonkey, I've gone tubeless on the front with no effort or issues, I'll do the back when the other bits go on this weekend.
So most of the new bits are here and about to go on, so I think I will replace the bb and cranks. What are people upgrading to that will work with 2x10 11-42 and ideally still allow a 5.0 tyre? I've been warned away from carbon race faces and the Sram GX, so that still leaves about 4 other race faces, the surleys or Hopes that can do 10/11 x1 and x1.
I went with Aeffect but I think it only comes set up for single ring. Ride comes in a double. Or you can get a £33 double adaptor for all cinch chainsets. Aeffect has the benefit of a standard 24mm axle for BB compatibility and just seems to be a really nice sweetspot of price and performance, to me.
The exact crank you choose seems to be kind of witchcraft though. I got the crank RAceface recommend for a 197 rear but it was very wide, it turned out I can use the 170mm version in my Dune with 1x10 and a flipped chainring and still go with a 4.8 tyre no bother, so I did that. Not sure how this all works with a double.
(I do have the wide, 197 rear Aeffects still for sale btw, spammity spam)
2x10 11-42 gives you a gear so low you'll need time lapse photography to see you move, though.
the Scott Big John appears to be the same frame.
Interesting. At first glance it does appear to bear a striking resemblance to the Calibre.
But I thought the Calibre had been designed 'in-house' ?
Does this rubbish that claim?
Does it also make those of us waiting for a Large Dune Calibre to be designed and released look a little silly?
Surely i'd be better off contacting Scott?
Lots of question marks there.
The frames are indeed very similar. The forks are different and the cable routing and lugs are different and on mine the top and downtubes aren't joined before the head tube but that's because it's an XL. The smaller size Big Jons have a very similar junction to the Dune. Not sure if the Dune has internal dropper routing?
But the rear triangle and esp the welded-on forged section around the drop-outs is the same
I would say the frames came from the same catalogue and the in-house bit refers to the cable routing
But the rear triangle and esp the welded-on forged section around the drop-outs is the sameI would say the frames came from the same catalogue and the in-house bit refers to the cable routing
Problem is, as soon as you accept they have some difference (even cable guides) then you know they ARE different and there could be any amount of butting or other changes you don't know about without having both in your hand. Its possible they are the same and but looking at the geo the angles are 68/69 for the dune and 69/73 for the Scott, so there is one difference (if those figures are correct of course).
Yep I got the 190 affect cranks with the 22/36 and Adapter. Sadly they didn't come with the correct spacers so they can't be used till they arrive. Everything else is on it and it looks good.
With the 2x10 11-42, we have some steep hills here !! and it will often be lugging lots of bike packing gear. It also means I can try a 1x setup with a 30/32 Raceface single cog and bash guard on the same spacer setup, so it was future proofing in one go.
slimjim78 - MemberInteresting. At first glance it does appear to bear a striking resemblance to the Calibre.

Nah, it's pretty common to find shared features and parts from frame to frame. Merida used to be the most obvious for this, you could see the exact same dropout forgings on so many different bikes.
The Scott and Dune are visibly not the exact same frame but I think you can assume they're from the same frame manufacturer, since they share parts and design features at the very least. Still doesn't make them equivalent in quality though, the processes, tubing etc could all be different. Or maybe not. Also doesn't make either one a catalogue frame, just means they have some shared parts. Don't read too much into it basically.
Ah ok then.
So the wait goes on for a large Dune...
So my Calibre Dune has now had a few upgrades.
Jones 710 Loop bars, Bike Hut Lock on grips, Shimano SLX M666 Callipers, Shimano SLX M666 and Shimano SLX M675 levers, uperstar Sintered Front & Shimano Finned Rear pads, Shimano XT M780 Shifters, Shimano XT FD-M786-D-L Direct Mount 2x10 Front Mech with Problem Solvers Direct Mount Adapter Size: 34.9-28.6mm, 100mm, Shimano Deore XT M786 Shadow+ rear mech, Raceface Affect 175/190 24mm cranks,Raceface 22/36 rings on a Raceface spider, Raceface 100mm/24mm BB, Shimano CN-HG95 Chain with a Connex 10 speed Link, Sunrace MX3 11-42 10-Speed Cassette, DT Swiss BR710 front wheel, with SON 28 15 150 hub and Alpina DB spokes and nipples, Charge Spoon saddle, Bontrager Rhythm Elite seat post and FWE Quick release Seat clamp. A DT Swiss BR710 front wheel, with Hope Fatso hub and Alpina DB spokes and nipples will be added shortly.
It rides amazingly very quick up and downhill.
Thanks to Jim Barrow for the building and Slam69 for the advice on cranks, BB's and chainrings.
Seriously love the look of the Dune & it appears to get great reviews. BUT by the time you upgrade it in the way some have done would u not be as well buying someone else's more expensive bike in the fIrst place ?
As above!
It looks like you replaced everything, why did you not just buy a good frame and build that up?
The way you did it just seems like a huge waste of money :/
lightman - Memberwhy did you not just buy a good frame and build that up?
It is a good frame, is the point you miss. If it said Salsa on the side people'd happily pay as much for the frame as the entire bike costs tbh. Buying it with the plan of replacing everything doesn't really make much sense but buying it to try then upgrading it with other parts as you feel fit does, because you're speccing the parts you want and learning the bike and what you want from it as you go.
Mine is basically down to just the frame, forks, headset and wheels from the original bike- but I couldn't have bought anything as good for the same money.
...and you can always take the new bits to a new frame if you decide that's what you want, but with all the fancy bits assembled gradually until then.
I love my Dune, really enjoying it, but might upgrade to a large if they ever come out...!
A) It was cheap to see if I wanted a fat bike.
B) I had a lot of the parts and I like the bike.
C) If I had wanted to buy something off of the peg it would have had certain components I would not have wanted.
D) If I was to upgrade most parts would come to the next frame.
E) There is nothing remotely similar to what it has cost so far, that I would want to own/ride.
but might upgrade to a large if they ever come out...!
I keep thinking that but I've got used to it now. Also refitted my Jumbo Jims this morning in honour of the faint covering of snow I woke up to....
Snow, fat bike and no pictures?
Part of the appeal is that the frame takes the upgrades in terms of hub widths and forks. Ultimately mine cost less than £500 and so far no additions other than muck, tho a set of Deore brakes have arrived this week.
For me a 'cheap', quality and fun bike. You don't need XT on it!
Snow, fat bike and no pictures?
It was a mere dusting and after getting home from children-taxi duties all that was left were a few slushy puddles. After riding in the Pyrenees for a week, I'm finding it hard to get motivated to venture out into the mud at home...
Anyone pondering a large Dune, or in fact any Dune, might have a slightly easier decision process - it seems to have disappeared from the Go Outdoors website?
I noticed yesterday the Dune has vanished off the Go Outdoors website, they were down to the last few medium frames a week or two ago.
The Voodoo Wazoo has also gone from the Halfords store, I think.
So the cheapest, semi-decent spec fatbike is now the ~£600 Mongoose.
But for value for money, the £1k Bluto equipped Fatty Trail is probably the leader now, closely followed by the £900 Fatty.
Oddly Halfords delete it from site when it sells out rather than leave it with a 'sold out' banner to maintain interest (first run sold out before Xmas).
I've been waiting for over 4 weeks now on warranty parts for the Dune, freehub, crank and BB. Store has been great but head office dealing with the parts is taking the piss.
I love the bike but the freehub is utter rubbish! the bike has done 120 miles!
Strange that the large Dune never appeared - maybe there's a relaunch, name change, better spec, bigger price?
Where's @calibremike for an update? He was pretty good on the spares front too?
I had to replace the rear bearings after about 100 miles - the seal was poorly fitted and trapped mud between the cassette and the hub until the freehub stopped freehubbing, causing the chain to tie itself up in knots. LBS sorted it all out but chain suck is never far away, especially when the chain gets muddy. Anyone else suffering this with the standard 2x8?
I'd go 1x but I was waiting for the large.... it'd be a lot cheaper than the belt drive hub geared Shand Tumshie which I'm trying not to find the perfect muddy winter bike!
All the Dunes seem to have disappeared from the Go Outdoors website now. Does this mean the new ones are coming??
No Dunes left. I asked in the week. Peeved generally as that or the Voodoo were going to be bought. Let's hope PX have a sale.
I still love my dune it got a cheap set of deore brakes and some on one floaters to help it go and stop in the local mudfest rest is standard. It's ace 🙂
Second hand on one fatty then....
Very happy with my second hand fatty. The previous owner had done everything I would have had to do myself. ie drilled the rims , put on a nice crank that took an easy to source bottom bracket ,carbon forks and tyres that work in the mud.
Mines got carbon fork but not had the rims drilled. Don't know if I can be arsed.
Bb might be getting creaky. What are my options - std sram double chainset on there at mo.
http://road.cc/content/news/187352-go-outdoors-stores-roll-out-new-specialist-cycling-departments
Doing a Halfords?
There are a few Wazoo 18" showing in stock at Halfords again, for collection only, including thee Chippenham store.
Spend 1p on something else and get it for £450. Get BC membership and get one for £400. 😉
Interesting regarding Go Outdoors, maybe a Dune v2 might materialise.
Putting a too-big tester on a bike then banging on about the sizing is pretty ridiculous. It's a fair point about the (still) one size but if a manufacturer did 3 sizes and sent the medium for testing, they wouldn't stick a 6 footer on it then complain it was too small for them.
Weird timing with it being so out of stock, wonder if it's just printer lag?
Putting a too-big tester on a bike then banging on about the sizing is pretty ridiculous.
More or less ridiculous than selling a bike in only one size?
Yes, I'm still irritated I couldn't have one 🙁
5thElefant - MemberMore or less ridiculous than selling a bike in only one size?
Nothing very ridiculous about that at all tbh. If you're just testing the water then just launching a medium makes a lot of sense- it's obviously worked well for them. Shame they've not been able to get the large out as quick as they said though.
Gratuitous plug time. My medium Fatty with drilled rims and carbon fork is in the classifieds.
http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/on-one-fatty-medium?replies=1#post-7661822
Medium Dune back on GoOutdoors website - must've been a hiccup, there's no new stock, but now the info button doesn't work so no large geometry figures accessible.
I've now ordered SRAM GX fat crank and 30T with a Sunrace 10 speed cassette to go with the Deore brakeset, rear mech and shifter that I already have to replace the existing 2x8 and Clarks hydraulic set - since I've done this, I confidently expect a new improved Dune available any day! Ah well, I suppose it will all be transferable...!
Anyone tried the SKS fatbike front and rear 'guards?
Contain yourself...
The wait is over...
Large Calibre Dunes are showing on the website for pickup in 7 days!!!!!! 😆

**** I might have to run home and pull the £35 Go Outdoors discount voucher that came through the letterbox this week out of the recycling!
The Grand MOM and DAD? That's what I use. The front works fine and is easily removed. The rear (like most seatpost mounted guards) can swing around a bit if not fitted tightly enough. I usually fit a little shim from a cut-up inner tube to improve friction.Anyone tried the SKS fatbike front and rear 'guards?
So far, I've been impressed with the SKS Fatboard mudguards, for a downtube upper seat tube set.
Cost me ~£35 through Amazon from Germany back in Feb.
Blimey that's taken me by surprise!
First thoughts, the large doesn't seem that much bigger, thoughts?
I know it makes me a whingebag to say so, but I mention it as the Medium seems pretty small in the first place.
If I decide it fits, I think I may well put my money where my mouth is! There's £35 extra discount on website, how low did we manage to get these for previously?
EDIT: the more I look at this bike the more I like the look of it
Best price I ever saw for the Dune was ~£530 with the card and a site-wide % discount offer, it was this side of Xmas, possibly the Easter weekend at the end of March when stock was running low on the medium frame.
So it's £579 currently with an additional £35 voucher makes it £545.
slimjim78 - MemberI know it makes me a whingebag to say so, but I mention it as the Medium seems pretty small in the first place.
It's actually a pretty typical medium- 420 reach, 1140 wheelbase, much the same size as a Solaris frinstance. I think the stubby seattube gives a false impression, though, a few people have posted that it's small but frinstance the large is bigger than a large OOF (and smaller than an OOF Trail)
I generally like a longer bike tbh... I think if there'd been a choice I'd have had the L, after all my Remedy is a large too... but the M is just fine for me at 5'10. I wouldn't buy an enduro bike with these dimensions but I wouldn't buy an enduro bike with these tyres, either so.
First thoughts, the large doesn't seem that much bigger, thoughts?
It's not. It makes sense as a large if they plan to do an extra large. Maybe next year?
When you put it like that, Northwind, then it makes more sense.
I even have clearance from the powers that be.. So I'm going to have a re-read of this thread and work out the best course for upgrade path. I have a replacement carbon bar that I can't seem I shift so I'd stick that on.. Tubeless the wheels.. Change the brakes...
How 'slick' is the gear change? Can't help but think about switching the shifters/rear mech out for maybe some cheap deore.
What size is the seat post?
What's the conclusion on the rear hub? I recall the free hub being a bit crap? And how about the BB, does it last? Are there any good value BB/chain set alternatives?
Seems daft to change so many components but that is usually half the fun.
How 'slick' is the gear change? Can't help but think about switching the shifters/rear mech out for maybe some cheap deore.
A Wazoo owner here (stone him!) but going from Altus 2x8 to budget and not particularly light 1x10 (SLX/Saint/Superstar) dropped a significant amount of weight as well as (IMHO) improving performance. That all-steel cassette is heavy, but the front mech with it's hideous spacer block carries more weight than the average mech. Think I dropped >400g off the front and ~100g off the back end.
Cheap shimano discs over-perform for the price, the Wazoos Altus-level brakes are as good as the XT on my big bike accounting for rotor size and are peanuts on CRC.
slimjim78 - MemberWhat size is the seat post?
What's the conclusion on the rear hub? I recall the free hub being a bit crap? And how about the BB, does it last? Are there any good value BB/chain set alternatives?
It's a 31.6 post.
The bearings in my rear hub were pish, but it's an easy hub to work on, replacing all 4 didn't cost much. (IIRC I used genuine Hope bearings as they were the right size, and cheap). I've found it otherwise reliable, it's the same old pawls-and-round-spring deal as in my specialized and fulcrum hubs, different parts but same design. But I've seen some reports of freehub failure, which'd be a warranty job obviously.
The BB isn't great, but it's not as bad- I found the bearings a little grumbly when I went to replace my cranks. pretty much on par with other cheap cranks, isoflow and the like. Again, it's a servicable part though the bearing it uses is a weird one and there's not much choice out there.
Replacement cranksets for 100mm isn't so easy- I went with Aeffects, which are awesome value and use a proper 24mm external BB, but not really cheap. Quite a lot of the cheaper options have obvious drawbacks, like SRAM and their orrible BBs. Course, you could get a replacement 100mm square taper BB, or just work with teh existing one. Standard parts seem fine, just heavy.
(I damaged the crank arm on mine so had to replace; tbh I don't think that was a fault, I'm pretty sure I didn't do the bolt up right!)
I didn't use any of the other OE bits at all, just stored them and fitted my spare bits straight off, so can't comment on shifting... But tbh basic shifting is usually alright.
I've had loads of the £40 M395/355s, they're ace, but at the mo are outvalued by M615 Deores £62.50 @ Merlin imho.
Is that sealed bearing in the hub then?..
Didn't think Hope did anything other than
Yeah, standard sealed bearings- can't remember the size, think I posted it in here or on uk fat, but it's the same as a Hope hub bearing and theirs are good quality.
Er, probably. I was servicing some hope xcs at the same time so it's always possible this is all pish. But they are definitely easily found, standard sealed bearings and no bother to replace or source.
Thats good to know, cheers.
How about the chainline when running 1x10, what have you found the issue to be?
I've never ridden a fat or 650b+ and am seriously torn between this Dune and the Marin Pine Mountain 1 at £739.. the latter of which would require much less upgrading.
My usual ride is a 140mm hardtail though, can't help but think the step to full fat would offer more of a difference than rigid 650b+. Possibly not much in it though.
Still dead keen to try a plus myself 🙂
1x10 is working fine for me, and with a range expander still clears a 4.8 tyre with a little room to spare. Chainline, with the standard cranks, I thought was fine- maybe not flawlessly centred but well within the "good enough as makes no difference" range.
An update on my Dunes maintenance following much use and abuse. Second hand Samox big ring now has had three teeth bent back into place. Rear wheel bearings finally gave up the ghost (crap sealing I believe is the main issue over an expensive hub) three of the four races had begun to disintergrate, one was still spinning sweetly. Mine took some hammer to remove. Upon reassembly one of the freewheel pawls sheered in half (don't know if it was my bashing it all about or failure, robbed an identical pawl from an old Fulcrum Red Zone hub. Filled the whole hub assembly new bearings etc with some decent water revising grease and it's running super sweet now.
Was going to put the Jumbo Jims back on the other week thinking summer was here but it's still shod with the Floaters.
On the second chain now, picked up a rust resistant Clarkes from Halfords silly cheap.
Overall still he best bike value for money ever!
I wonder if go outdoors are considering making the large available as frame only?
I bet they'd make a killing from those of us who love what we bought, but wish it was a tad bigger...
Well bollox. Mediums available for store collection only. Closest available to me is in Liverpool, a short 280+ miles away 😥
Dunno if anyone's checked this out. Go Outdoors again, on sale, much cheapness. £600 down to £400
NVM, there's only one left in the UK, Coatbridge branch Glasgow??
I've now ordered .... since I've done this, I confidently expect a new improved Dune available any day! Ah well...!
Less than 24 hours, typical - all my upgrade bits arrived yesterday!
@scotroutes is the grand mom wide enough for a 4" tyre? The MuckyNutz AssSaver I use at the moment might save ass but not back or 'sac!
@nobody it was the Fatboard rear I was looking at, pity you can't get it separately as I'm happy with MuckyNutz on the front and downtube.
That is pretty poor timing Jeff! Best of luck with the upgrades though.
Anyone tried a Titec-J bar or Jones bar on a Dune yet?
dahedd - MemberWell bollox. Mediums available for store collection only. Closest available to me is in Liverpool, a short 280+ miles away
Maybe you could work with one of the medium owners- get a large and swap frames with them?
@dahedd, I had a look at that bigfoot when I got my Dune, it's definitely in the "cheap fatbike" camp rather than the "great value fatbike" camp. Not to say it's a bad option but I'd spend the extra for a Dune or Fatty or similar personally.
I blame this thread, but mainly I blame you - Northwind - and maybe a few bottle of local IPA, for tonight's purchase of a large Dune.
Here's to hoping it's awesome! Yeah!
Thought I'd share my thoughts on the upgrade path for the Dune in my experience.
Bear in mind my bikes only done 160miles!
Ditch the horrid wheels, I know a few Dune owners local to me who have all had Freehub issues mine as died a death and I'm now 4 weeks into waiting for a replacement wheel.
Standard chain rings are made of chocolate, teeth missing and bent within 100 miles. Mines now running 1x10 SLX on the standard cranks and runs fine.
BB bearings now have a lot of play in them and could do with replacing soon.
Standard stem and bars are fine if heavy, I'd Leave them in favour of upgrading the brakes.
