I removed one of the brass keys in my dropper post?

X fusion manic keeps sticking down. I've taken it apart and cleaned it all, it looks like the post is slightly bent and jams when compressed. If I remove one of the keys it gives it just enough movement not to jam.

I realise this won't make it as strong but still having 2 keys in will stop the saddle rotating.

Is this a bad idea?

As you say; having two keys will reduce the durability as you'll only have two thirds of the contact area that the post was designed with.

However if it's useless with three (because it jams) then you've got nothing to lose and may also get some more useful life from it before it packs up all together.

How quickly it will pack up is impossible for me/us to estimate...

That was my thinking, just wanted to check I'd not overlooked anything.

It might give me enough time to look out for a secondhand post that's failed for some other reason and build a single working post from bits.

Are the correct keys in the correct slots?

An oversize key in the wrong slot could cause it to stick.

@moff - a first glance all the keys look to be the same size - I'll check if tonight - thanks

Does it only stick when not installed on the bike? Mine would stick down when installed in the seatpost. I found I had over tightened the clamp slightly. Took a bit of experimentation to get it right.

I've had the seat post collar causing it to stick before, it's not that this time.

Took it apart again and the post is slightly bent, about 1mm over it's length. This is causing it to bind on the bushing/keys. Taking a key out allows just enough movement to keep it working. Hopefully it'll hold out until I can find a 170 to upgrade it, or contact upgrade bikes about it

Perhaps try filing the key until you get it working again?

Discovered it's still under warranty - so before I start filing any keys I'll see what upgrade bike have to say 🙂
