My current 'enduro' style bike is an not v modern 2013 Cube Stereo HPC 160. It has 160 Pikes and a CCDB air cs.
It always feels a little short. Its an 18" and at 5'9 its as long in the seat as i want. It takes a 150mm dropper ok.
Its angles etc are,
Reach 423
Stack 607
HA 66.5
SA 74.6
I have been looking at the Bird Aeris 145 in ML size that Ben currently has on his site.
It is,
Reach 481
Stack 599
HA 65.5
SA 76
So the Aeris is + 58mm Reach, -8mm Stack, -1° HA, +1.4 SA. It is +60mm wheelbase, and -6.5mm chainstay. It will also take tyres bigger than 2.3 inch.
What does the hive mind think? I have a 26 DH bike and an Orange Gyro 29 and some HT too. How much more ace would the Aeris feel over the 7yr old Stereo?
Thanks
Ian
A lot. I went from an older, short bike (about 400mm reach) to a 455mm LLS bike. The difference was monumental. It's more stable, faster, and crucially a lot more fun. I feel so much more comfortable on it than I did the other one.
My mate did similar going from a 2008ish Remedy to a newer Geo bike, and he said pretty much the same thing.
I'm looking at 470-480 reach bikes next as I love how the longer reach feels.
Cubes have always been pretty short reach-wise, and still are.
The big change in reach isn't something to be alarmed about - the seat angle has a lot to do with it. If you compare top tube lengths, the change in frame size won't seem as dramatic. I bet it will feel pretty normal to sit on.
Will it make me awesome? Or at least faster and safer?
It depends on your proportions. If you have a long back and short legs then the ML Aeris may fit very well. If your leg length is average or longer then it’ll be too long. I’m 5’10.5” with long legs and 455mm reach fits me well, longer feels too stretched downhill on steep or tight stuff.
Im short legs...30 inseam and long arms with a big ape index.
I think the 'fit'of the ML would be good. I did check with Ben P.
I was after how it would 'feel' as a bike. I know its subjective but it does seem like it would be good for me.
You’re on the border of M and ML in the Aeris 145LT. I’m 5’9 and rode the ML for 3 years but always felt it was just a bit too long.
However someone I ride with has an ML at 5’7 and he rates it.
Must be down to proportions - I’ve got quite short arms but longish legs for my height - I suspect he’s the other way round.
I’ve just swapped to a Bird Aether and sized down to an M and I’m much happier on it. If I were to get another 145 it would be an M.
That said I got stacks of pbs on my ML Aeris and had the best rides I’ve ever had on it over the 3 years. It just wants to go fast on anything downhill and builds up speed like you wouldn’t believe. It’ll also get you through stuff that you thought you’d gone in too hot and it’s amazing what you can get away with on it.

If this it the case it sounds like the ML would be a great fit for you. Dropped wise I’m a 32” inside leg and fitted a Oneup 180mm dropper on it (v2 actuator) with about 1cm lower it could go into the frame just for reference. A brand X 120mm dropper was quite a long way out of the frame.
i'm 5 foot 9, completely average in proportion, and ride an enduro bike with 481mm reach (though not a Bird). it fits great, better than my last enduro bike, which had 470mm reach. but this parameter wasn't the only one that changed when i changed bikes.
try before you buy ideally is the usual message. but these sorts of numbers can (and do) work for some people of your height.
i'd expect that the bike will feel surprisingly normal if its anything like mine. i very occasionally get hung up in something really tight as its a long bike, though this is becoming less common the more i ride it. for the most part it basically feels like cheating. very easy to ride fast.
182 cm here.
New skool geometry has been a voyage of discovery for me since 2017. After a couple of different frames, I'm beginning to zero in on a reach of 480mm ish. No doubt I could ride longer, but I think that would be to move the centre of gravity forwards, and to make it fit comfortably I reckon my saddle would slide further forwards than it is now.
I'm 5'10" with longish arms and 31" legs, the ML fit me really well with a 35mm long stem, 800 bars and 170mm Brand X dropper, about 1" from slammed.Great bike!
5ft10.5 here (we must be clones chiefgrooveguru!), 33" inside leg though... I've tried all sorts of geometry over the recent years, but find that anything over about 460mm reach becomes tiresome for me personally. I don't like these new ultra short stems, I run 40-45mm usually, and also find overly steep seat angles a bit of a chore too (think 77deg or steeper) but that's possibly cos I'm clipped in and not running flats.
Anyway... I can and have ridden bikes with 480+ reach, but I found them cumbersome, and a stretch to the bars. My Evil Offering is 458mm reach with a 40mm stem and measured 75.5 effective seat angle in its current configuration (X-Low with 150mm fork) and it fits perfectly. I have ridden a friends Large with a 20mm longer reach, and whilst I could ride it happily, I wouldn't want to for prolonged periods as it felt a bit of a stretch...

Yes! (Apart from the clips). I’m about 33” leg too, maybe a little longer. I’ve tried shorter stems but have ended up back on 50mm on both bikes, I just prefer the steering feel (770mm bars).
The chainstays are so long (455mm) on my Levo that it climbs well with a relatively slack seat tube (~73.5). My Zero hardtail is 76.5 sagged and that feels steep. The Levo’s saddle is pushed all the way forwards, the Zero’s most of the way back, so that’s like adding a degree to one and taking a degree off the other (30mm over 735mm saddle height) making them 74.5 and 75.5
I don’t think arm length has much of a bearing on sizing - I know some people with long backs, short legs and long arms think they want a lot of reach because of their arms, but my arms are bloody long (6’2” armspan) and I prefer the reach on the shorter side for my height.
I do think that leg length has a big influence on bar height - it’s all about your hip hinge and the longer your legs, the higher that hip hinge is.
