If you don't love a what tyres thread, move along. Actually in nearly 20 years, this might be popping my "What tyres" cherry....

Anyway - the gravel bike is getting another (actually two, but let's not confuse things) set of wheels in 700c flavour so the current 47mm shod 650b wheels are getting repurposed for more more gnar. Short term because I'm using it the lead a group of kids all on MTBs on a 5 day expedition and I don't want to be the weak link and long term because I reckon 10mm in width is the minimum between setups to justify different wheels and other set will have 40mm on them. There's logic in there somewhere...

Anyway, 2.1s for a gravel bike - probably more for super rough trails than bog trotting and you don't want them to be too draggy on short sections of linking road. So we're talking xc tyres in 650b flavour.

I'm thinking Shwable Thunder Burt. A bit random maybe but they don't break the bank......but maybe they break the rider? Thoughts or alternatives?

Ta

WTB Senderos are good and CRC seem to have some good prices on WTB Road plus tyres at the mo.

I was after something similar for my Tandem and went for some Ventures with the tougher SG2 casing.

I don't suppose you can easily get 27.5 Nanos any more? Iirc the 27.5 weren't TCS in any case but they were grippy but still fast.

It's actually Senderos 47mm that are coming off. They don't do a bigger version in 650b. But yes it's basically those but more wind that I'm after!

I’ve used 2.1 thunderburts on my gravel bike. Great tyres, fast rolling and feel nice but they are ever so fragile. Mine were forever leaking and I tore a few as well.

I’m now on 2.1 Goodyear connectors. They’re not as fast rolling but a hell of a lot tougher! Cheaper as well.

Conti Racekings? They're 2.2 though. Pretty reasonable too and I've never had any problems. Doddle to set up tubeless.

Specialized Fast Trak - comes on their entry level MTB hardtails but is, in effect, a massive 650b gravel tyre.

Vittoria Mezcals? BikeInn were doing them for under £30 each (plus postage). I got some in 29x2.6 but had to wait a fair while, though didn't need to pay any extra import taxes on them. They also had the Mezcals in 27.5 x 2.1 which I considered for the gravel bike, but the Pirelli cinturato 50's on there at the mo have loads of life left...

Thanks. I went for the Mezcals. At bikeinn's price it's hard not to (bought 3, so a spare or extra when the rear wears out) usual longer ***inn delivery times so might not make it for next trip but hey ho. Thanks all.

P.s. all my old swim/hike/snow/bike inn orders are not in my profile anymore - did they do a wiggle and clear previous historys?

I've fitted 650b x 55mm Mezcals on my Vielo. Its a very tight squeeze but I'm hoping they will help me out on the Badger Divide. So far they have performed very well on dry, rocky Purbeck trails.
