Got to be in the running there! Anybody signed up?
Yes, the road will know if someone is using their personal bike, rather than event bikes, on the event day and make their ride much more hazardous.
Give me strength!
Farkin joke.
Not really a cycling event. There are similar things when new bridges are built.
I read
“I write to urge you to take soundings from local cyclists to gauge whether the proposals outlined will engage them as you would wish.”
as

Oh FFS...
That looks really bad. And not even the sort of really bad that's good. Then again I'm clearly not the target market, I'm just not sure that anyone is.
Dicking around on closed roads has its own appeal though.
Who on earth thought that whole scenario would be a good idea??
What an utter joke!

We took a nightime trip onto the new M74 before it was opened even for the event.
Security made us get off at the nearest slip road. "Where is it?" "Over there" so we rode all the way back with an escort who was loving it.
As above - it's a common "event" to let non-motorised users onto new roads just prior to opening. The same happened with the new Forth bridge. This one has just been spectacularly mis-handled.
Can someone copy and paste the text so I don't have to accept their cookies
I'm sure its not April 1st....is it?
I was a bit miffed, was planning to attend based on what was initially said. Given most of the entry points are sliproads off not very cycle friendly bits of dual carriageway I’m guessing they thought it was too risky. I’m thinking A944/A93 would be the only bits I’d want to hop on at.
Lots of comments on the road cc article about bypasses never working, have these people never been to Aberdeen! I know it won’t solve everything but should hopefully reduce the amount of industrial traffic that has to pass through the city. Plus it should ease 3 terrible choke points

the streets around the south side of glasgow got much much quieter overnight when they opened the m74 extension, was a great idea. So many people complained about it and protested building it for yonks too, don't hear much from them anymore! 😆
they did the cycle thing on it too, think people could use their own bike and they cycled it all, not sure though, didn't really appeal that much to me.

+1 I did the walk on the new bridge before it opened to traffic. Very similar setup by the sounds of it. I had to get to Edinburgh Park station then walk a surprisingly long way to a shuttle bus to get to the bridge.
This road looks like the perfect missed opportunity for some sensible cycling infrastructure off to the side. as said, the 'event' is just to rub your noses in it.
Strategic Traffic????

Errr no.
It's a bypass, it's a long way round route, mostly through the middle of nowhere so lorries don't have to go through the city center.
It's pretty much the exact opposite of what would be useful as a cycling route.
It's a bit like Reading council spent a fortune upgrading the cycle path along Lower Earley Way, it's not a bad cycle path (apart from the junctions not having right of way and the fence making it difficult to see cars indicating) but it's fundamental flaw is it's a bypass for Lower Earley to get cars between J10 and J11 of the M4 without going through a housing estate, it doesn't go anywhere you'd want to be on a bike! If you live in Lower Earley, or want to cycle from somewhere else to Lower Earley then it's perpendicular to your route!
Strategic Traffic????
Traffic management speak for lorries and stuff that has to be on the road.
I.e. to grow a towns economy you need an ability to get more goods in/out of the town. So they're of strategic importance to the plan.
A car isn't strategic because you'd rather the occupants were on public transport really. If a car can't get somewhere the the driver will just find another way, you can't really do that with a lorry load of stuff.
The idea of the event sounds fun.
Worst promotion/rues ever more like
Tina's you are wrong on many levels. You clearly have not been to Aberdeen.
Anyway is anyone heading to marcshal college today at mid day for the protest about the existing cycling infrastructure that has been left cut in two isolating communities .... Stonehaven now have to negotiate the busiest round about in the north east on the road to get north.
West of miltimber brae are now directed onto road followed by the wrong side of the road to continue their journey and Westhill have had several more junctions and busy round about exits to cross without lights have been added.
It has improved for the car to the detriment of local active travel which is the exact opposite of the guidelines set out by the Scottish executive.
We have been campaigning for change at the miltimber brae crossing since plans were first released.
Trot out the health and safety as a excuse for any random thing, no need to have a actual logical reason.
I would guess they want to control the numbers of people on the road at any time hence restricting the number of bikes available.
this could be down to the organisers but more likely due to some council/insurance requirements for security, water, medical supervision. Someone will have sat down and done a risk assessment and risked the shit out of it...
one day at work someone was drinking out of a glass and although it is a perfectly normal thing to do we could not work out if it was allowed on site. It is very easy to de-risk something out of existence
Or more likely something is sponsoring the event and only wants their bikes and health and safety has been used as a justification.
Environmental as hell when 10(empty) buses were driven up from Dundee on Friday night to ferry folk too and from the event all weekend
If you live in miltimber/peterculter where the event is you had to travel into town center and get on one of the busses.
I did a few cycle orienteering events around the foot & mouth outbreak, years ago. They were my worst. & the rough ride when folk got hypothermia.
That one up there looks like a “cycling” event was budgeted into the road build. They had money to burn and it was organised by a person who has a family member who owns a bus& bike hire company.
🙂
