A while ago I bought a Cane Creek Double Barrel which came with a Titanium Spring fitted

There is no stroke or spring rate printed on the spring

I'm trying to work out/find out what stroke/spring rate it is

The spring weighs 364g and has a free length of roughly 152mm

The shock is 216mm x 63mm

At a guess I think it's probably a 500lb x 2.75" or 2.8", but I'm far from certain

Unfortunately I can't ask the person I bought it from

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can find out?

Put a known load on it and measure compression

given the length its going to be correct for a 2.5 inch stroke shock like yours. maybe a 450lb spring

Thanks for the replies

poah - I'm not convinced that it is a 2.5" stroke as the 152mm free length is actually slightly too long for the shock

When fitted the preload was wound completely out & in order to remove the spring I actually had to slightly compress it to remove the retention clip/plate

Onzadog - any chance you could provide a little more info on how I go about doing this in practice?

My SLS spring is a bitch to put on my CCDB IL compared to the standard steel one. it may be suitable for two lengths due to the amount of compression it can take. measure the space between the coils.

do you have a picture of the spring?

If it were me, I'd fit a bar to a plate and drop the spring over it. Then follow with another plate and stand on it. Get someone to measure the compression, then weigh yourself and the top plate.

Failing that, compare to a known spring, if it gives twice as much sag, it's half the spring rate.

Or, compare, number of coils, wire diameter and coil angle with a known spring (of the same material)

I have now managed to take a few pictures

It looks similar to mine, for a 200x57mm - that's 450lbx2.25" made by DSP.

I've also measured the spacing between the coils which is approx 16mm

I have a CCDB coil with eye-to-eye and stroke of 216 and 63 too.
My ti-spring is stated to be a 2.5 stroke spring, but has a free length of around 130mm.

A free length of 152mm would be only just able to fit on my shock, and i suspect would allow the shock to bottom out too easily. the distance between winds is about 15mm on mine too.

Not sure if this helps, but it at least 20mm longer than mine.

I'd apply almost no preload to your spring, then sit on the bike and see how much sag youre getting. If it's more than 30% then its not the right spring for your weight anyway and you'll have to order something else. So, problem solved.

What bike is it on BTW?

Thanks lardman - that's certainly helpful

The shock is fitted to an Intense Tracer 2

Since is is actually pretty much too long for the shock anyway it was already preloaded even with the preload collar fully wound out

In order to remove I had to partially compress it then flip the retention collar out with a screwdriver

I've already ordered and fitted a 350lb (x 2.5) spring (based on spring calculations) which has a free length of about 143mm & fits fine - also seems to be about right for my weight

I think the TI spring is probably a 450lb or 500lb as I haven't come close to bottoming it out
