Has anyone bought a womans mtb for their child? I am looking for a bike for my 10yr old and was thinking a voodoo nzumbi 26" from halfords but the 15" is not available. I did spot a 27.5 14" womans voodoo soukri that ticks all the boxes and does not look any different to any 'boys' bike. Whats STW thought, is this a good idea. From what i can see it just has a shorter reach than a standard bike, which may not be a bad thing for a 10yr old.

No, but it's something I considered and I looked into women's specific frames. It's still something I will do (a frame at least, I'll happily just swap most of the bits off the hardtail I last used years ago) at some point in the future when I want to build him a proper MTB (for now he's on a 26" Isla hybrid). If it fits and it's not some girly colour then why not?

We had a mini Specialized ladies bike. Apart from a little decal and smaller frame size available compared to men's, there was no difference.
It was even lush sparkly blue...

The voodoo is just a unisex blue so looks fine to me. Taking jnr to sit on one tomorrow to check sizing, just hope he does not see any mention of 'womans bike' as he liked it when i showed him a picrure of it. As it is a bike to work (he is giving me a backie if anyone asks) it has to be halfords.

Some very cheap small women's frames on bike-discount.de if you fancy a self build.

I almost bought one of the Cube 14.5" frames from bike-discount for my son when he grows out of his 24" bike.  Which will be in about two years time...

I have just built myself a hardtail but dont fancy doing the same for jnr as there is no way i could do it for close to what a complete build on bike to work is (i am in Ireland so can get 52% off the cost of the bike) so, as he will grow out it, a build doesnt make sense, he can get one of my bikes in a few years when he gets bigger which will give me an excuse to get myself another. Big brother,Jnr1, is already on my old 26" hardtail so just need to kit out jnr2 so he can join us.

@andy4d

most important for the boy: the "looks" has to be the same as a boys bike. And he might never believe that the bike is really the same...

But in fact: good idea! Maybe possible to get some stickers on which boys love.

@rossburton , ads678:

yes - these frames are great. Bought a Stereo HPA 150 mm 27.5+ frame for me (last 20" size they had). Quality is amazing. And: bike-component has a sale for the Fox 150 mm boost fork and bike-discount for the Fox 200x57 Float DPS shock. Custom wheels I normally buy at actionsports (FUN WORKS rims & DT 370 hubs).

So yes - these frames are fantastic. Major model 2018 change at Cube. And welding and machining quality on the frames is top notch,

Well i went for it. Got the 14" voodoo soukri for him. Pick it up in a week or two. Was even happier it had £80 off when i went in to sort it.
