Doing a bit of maintenance and my bearing is pretty rough, anyone know the size of bearing required to replace it?
Wolftooth site just says "remote bearing". Don't really want to remove and measure as it still works even though rough and doubt it'll stay in one piece when removed so would rather keep using my bike whilst the replacement is on order.
It's bloody tiny that's for sure. Given its use, I'd pop the seal off with a pin, clean it out thoroughly and pack it full with a good grease. Marine grease preferably.
I'd only buy a new one if it's totally beyond saving.
I have a spare lever in the garage as I swapped to the light action. I'll have a look and see if the size is visible in a bit.
Picture on their site of the replacement is a 6702 2RS but then it might just be a photo of a random bearing
I think I used the size off the picture when I replaced mine. I would have bought it from Kinetic, but as I have bought loads of I couldn't pin it down.
Just looked at mine, but no markings on the seal.
Just looked at mine. No visible markings. Removal would destroy as only the inner race is accessible to push it out. I made it 20mm OD, 14.5 ID and about 4mm thick (couldn't get calipers in there). I'd not buy based on those measurements as the calipers had a low battery and not easy access.
Edit: 6702 2RS is 21x15x4mm which sounds feasible.
Many thanks nixie - will get a 6702 on order!
@nixie I ended up on ebay - got a stainless S6702-2RS from hendersonbearings costing £4.06 posted.
For all those interested, after taking apart the lever i tapped out the old bearing lightly with a punch using a couple of bits of wood for support, tolerances are certainly no where near frame bearing houses. After a cleanup of the lever the new bearing was able to be pressed in by hand. It's in there tight enough to not be pulled out by my finger again though. Lever action buttery smooth once again!
Nice one, thanks.
To add to the ease of removal I did 3 removals today with heat. Left the lever in a cooling oven (probably under 100c) for 5 minutes. This was enough to make the aluminium expand and then with a socket as a support the bearings came out by hand (bearing on socket, even push down on lever. Managed to move the good bearing from my spare short lever to my light action lever without damage.
I know exactly what it is as mine is also ropey! 21mm OD, 15mm ID, 4mm thick so a 61702 will also work and is cheaper than the 6702.
