I've got an opportunity for a cheeky couple of hours in a couple of weeks as I'm passing on the M1... The Woburn Bike Trails website is a little out of date but suggests that there is at least one waymarked trail of a decent length. Is that the case? Looks like lots of jumpy stuff as well, but I'm after a couple of hours of singletracky fun... will I get that??
XC racey bike or FS fun slack bike???? GPX or highlights of the best bits much appreciated?
Cheers...
Its a tiny area full of wiggly trails. Turn up and ride about, you will end up on good singletrack within moments.
XC bike is fine. There is an area full of jumps, but its just one area.
The waymarked trails arent bad, waymarking is a bit iffy in places, especially felling diversions but an hours worth of fun
Off piste is a bit better on the 'church side' but less obvious trails
Worth sticking a fiver in your pocket - if the ranger is about you'll be asked to buy a day ticket for the bike park bit (not so much for the XC stuff though I think).
agree with comment above - the church side is best.
I like WS on the whole but I've found it a bit difficult to string together a longish decent ride - seems to be lots of short good bits which are linked by dull bits. Loads of 'no cycling' signs dotted about in the woods too - I guess to try and segregate bikes from walkers a bit.
The way marked trail is the Longslade Trail - one section is currently closed, but the rest is open - its possible to do the current loop in under an hour - it is easy to loop some sections twice to make it slightly longer
For the most part the signage is good, but it does completely disappear at a few points (I have assumed you will start at the official start point): -
1. Just after the closed section you do a climb initially on fire road, but turning into singletrack - turn right at the top of this hill
2. About 2/3 of the way round you reach a point where you cross a fireroad followed by a short sharp climb at the top of this section you follow a descent on the right - on the way down there is a very easy to miss left hand turn - basically if you reach fire road you've gone too far
3. There are no signs at the end of the trail on how to get back to the start/car park - turn left and head generally straight ahead - the car park is on the right
