Wobbly Tyre - is it the insert ?

I have just been out and noticed a major wobble in my DHR 2 tyre. (2.4 x 27.5 3C exo) as I was riding down the road. The rim is straight but the tyre has a big wobble in it. I don't think I have used the tyre for about a year and can't be sure it didn't have a minor wobble in before I removed it.

It has just been re-fitted to a 30mm rim with a new standard rimpact insert. I assume the tyre is goosed, but is there a chance it is the insert ?

It shouldn't be the insert as they sit in the rim bed, if the tyre is definitely seated properly then it's probably ready for the bin

Check the tyre is seated properly, usually a line all the way round close to the rim so easy to see if a section is not set right.

Pump the tyre up to its max pressure and see if it seats properly.

I’ve had lots of Maxxis do that, although not since putting Rimpact Pros in 🙂

My current Magic Mary had a notable wobble from new (I didn’t really have time to return it) and reseating it with a compressor changed it not a jot, although it could be worth checking. It also didn’t change when I put the Rimpact pros in and seems pretty bombproof, I do plenty of big ish drops. If it’s still sealed really well at that part of the rim then I tend to leave them, if I can burp it with strong pressure then it gets binned. Several nearly new Maxxis had to go in the bin last year…

Clearly, what I do may be wrong!

Maxxis went through (not sure if they still do) phase of tyres going wobbly. Quite a few people got them replaced under warranty if they were reasonable new.

Fair point, just gave it a go, no change but a couple of previously sealed holes temporarily opened up 🙄

Check the tyre is seated properly, usually a line all the way round close to the rim so easy to see if a section is not set right.

Cheers, looked more or less even.

Might try reseating it later.

Are the new Contis any better, or is it to soon ?

I have a Rim pact in a 2.4 high roller 2 that has a wobble but it doesn't without the tyre insert.

Possibly stretched the bead while fitting it with the insert. The new rimpacts are wider than before.

I’ve had a dissector and a Forekaster go wobbly. Dissector just did it without any kind of insert. The Forekaster has previously been ok with an insert in but this time round fitting it’s gone wobbly. I assume the bead got overstretched in the fight to get it on the rim with the rimpact in there. As it’s on the rear I’m just going to ride it with the wobble for now I think. It’s the old style Forekaster in 27.5/2.6” so they don’t make it anymore.

I suspect the insert is coincidental.

It's so common it's known as "the Maxxis wobble".

I have a wobble on my front 2.8 Rekon. What is the adverse effect of running it like that?

Depends why it's wobbling, if it's just a molding fault you can just keep using it until it dies.
If it's a failure in the carcass (2 layers delaminating or tearing) or the bead getting damaged then eventually it's going to fail massively.

As others said try seating, deflate, brush loads of soapy water around the beads and reflate to 60psi or more. Should straighten it out.
If that doesn't work then we are in black majic territory.
