Hi folks. I'm fixing an old bike and the rear cassette is that wobbly that the gears won't index properly.
I've replaced bearings, put in a new axle and still the same.
When you spin the cassette on the wheel when the wheel is off the bike it doesn't wobble!
Sorry, should add that this is a cheap cassette freewheel, not a freehub with a cassette.
It's probably a bent or off centre axle (or terribly made hub). Loads of cheap wheels do this.
And it's either a cassette, or a freewheel. Don't need to use both terms!
Threads on either the freewheel or hubshell are probably not aligned quite right, so when you spin the freewheel back when off the bike it looks fine. But when the wheel turns, there is a 'wobble'.
What speed is it? Does it need a spacer?
+1 on bent spindle - fortunately they’re cheap and relatively easy to replace

OP confirmed it’s a freewheel - best to quit whilst you’re ahead 🤪
^ Spindle was replaced as per first post.
Stick the free wheel on another wheel maybe? or even an old hub? That will tell you if it's the wheel/axle or the block. Never seen a block where the whole thing runs wobbly unless the pawls or bearings are knackered.
Thanks for replies. I think it may be the threads on the wheel as I've tried everything else.
Cheers
