On a whim with very little research, I appear to have booked a caravan for a family trip to Withernsea, Yorks at half term. I'll admit, it was somewhat price driven....
I've now had a chance to see what the internet returns about Witernsea and it would appear that I am not in for the cultural retreat I'd hoped for.
Before we get there and I find myself under a patio or the subject of a thread in netmums, can you please suggest some outing ideas?

So far, I've planned on visiting York on the way there and RAF Holmpton to check out the underground bunker.

I'm also taking my cross bike so some route ideas would be nice too, should I be lucky enough to live (and can fob the family off with the indoor pool at the holiday park).

Go to The Deep in Hull.
There is an underground bunker in Holmpton (about 2/3 mile from Withernsea)that's ace
Go for a ride around Winestead area and into Patrington. Also take a trip to Spurn Point nature reserve and check out the WW2 beach bunkers. Go for a meal at the Station in Patrington or Roos arms (in Roos, Hilyard arms in Patrington.
Loads to do

Jeez, Withernsea. I still have the scars from last time I went there.

Worth a trip up the lighthouse if it's open, and Spurn would be brilliant for an adventure with the kids - check its accessible though, the causeway was destroyed a couple of years ago. Possibly last year, actually.

Second the Deep too, it's ace. If you like fish. And penguins. I think they have penguins too. Plenty of good museums in Hull too if that's your thing.

Seem to remember Tunstall as being a nice wee beach that's a bit more secluded, but it's years since I've been there.

Withernsea and price driven

Yep, those words go together.

No idea what it is like now but even as kids we'd take Hornsea over Withernsea, and that was 40 years ago.

Spurn head is an excellent place to spend the afternoon expalining to your better half the finer points of longshore drift, that should get the romance going. And if it doesn't visiting nearby penisthorpe for 'subliminal' reinforcement might help.

If York I can heartedly recommend the national rail museum. Free and ace. Went on the weekend.

Withernsea 😀 😀

There's Hornsea up the road, but I suppose that's a dump these days.

I can imagine it'll be a lovely way to spend the time in the last week of October. There's hardly ever rain or storms at that time of year.

Isn't Hull the European Capital of Culture or something?

Yes, The Deep is excellent.

I grew up in Goole. Can't help much. Sorry.

Another vote for the Deep.
Docks area in Hull is OK for a wander.
Drive across the Humber Bridge.
Beverley is a lovely town with old walls.
Drive up to Scarborough and / or Whitby.
Visit Flamingoland Zoo / theme park

Go and see baby seals being born at Donna Nook. It's a bit of a trek but is considered to be one of the UK's best wildlife events. You can get some great views. It is also possibly the coldest place in the world.

Thanks for all the helpful (and not so helpful) comments. Brant's pictures really brought the place to life.

The Railway Museum, RAF bunker, Spurn Head and dinner in the Roos Arms are all definite. Would like to go to Hull too (never thought i'd ever say that) so that we can go to The Deep if we have time.

It seems there's more to do than I thought and 4 nights might not be enough 😯

@lawhitey - we're staying at the Park Resorts caravan park. I figured that the indoor pool would be a good distraction. £200 for 4 nights including "entertainment" passes. For that sort of money, it must be good.

Should I survive, i'll post some pics....

i grew up not far from there (Keyingham).

Around Hull, there's lots of nice quaint villages. Many of the local pubs were turned into posh gastropubs and are well worth a drive out for a nice meal. Inside Hull, the restaurent scene isn't great but i've heard of some new places opening up bucking the trend.

Another nice trip is to cycle along the old Hull-Withernsea railway track. When i was a kid, it was great. I haven't been in over 10 years, so i can't say for sure now.

+1 for the Deep. Decent day out.

+1 for the docks close to the Deep. Will be chilly!

+1million for Spurn Point. Fantastic place.

Consider visiting Fort Paull. http://www.fortpaull.com/

Also, Beverley Minster is nice. The town's quite nice too.

Finally, how about rockpooling and fossil hunting at Flamborough head?
