With so many new bikes being advertised as being able to run either 27.5+ or 29" then surely 650b bikes can run 26+ and 26" bikes can run 24+. I guess 29+ could even be 29+ / 27" (the industry may have to rebrand 27" when they decide to introduce this wheelsize to mountain biking).
Will we see an explosion of 24+ and 26+ rims and tyres for people wanting to jump on the plus size bandwagon without buying a new bike?
Here's my 24+. It works best on tight trails with lots of roots but it's good fun pretty much anywhere except fireroads:

What, stuff where we can use our existing kit with a new pair of wheels?
No way! How will the industry sell frames and forks which can accommodate marginally larger diameter wheels then?
(nice bike!)
24+ is now my favourite wheelsize, that's awesome!
24+ was tried 15 years ago for DH, but back then the tyres available were too heavy to make it work and offered no real benefit. Might be fun though.
That looks amazing.
Your kitchen looks a mess though...
There's a guy on Vital MTB that's turned his Enduro 29er into a 27.5 Fatty, looks really nicely done too. Will try to find the link.
yes, yes, yes this is the future. Lovely looking bike, where did you get the rims and tyres?

other magazines are available.
Not the one I was thinking of, but thanks anyway. It's a bit more homebrew than the dirt one.

The rims are these ones:
The tyres are 3" Halo Contras. I think I just got them from CRC. Duro Wildlife Leopard are the same tyre rebranded as far as I know.
And yes, the Contras are unnecessarily heavy.
Cheers Bruce. re the tyres, I should have just looked a little more closely at your pics.
Pretty sure my 26" wheeled bike can run 26+. I am running some high volume 2.2 and have a lots of room to spare, i.e. easily another 3/4 of an inch.
OK running a 27.5 frame with 35mm 26" wheels and 2.75 tyres. Works very well
24+ - something that should have been left in the 90s !

[s]One word[/s] three words - bottom bracket height

I'm pretty sure it was. Now it's only trials riders, unicyclists, and me as far as I can tell.
I'm having fun 🙂
Surly Instigator 2.0 is (AFAIK) the only real attempt at 26+ ?
I was tempted to try it on a 45650b as the BB is apparently quite tall anyway.
I'm running mine on a 45650b. You couldn't go much bigger than the combination I'm running on the back but plenty of clearance on a 26" rev on the front.
Well, I'm glad to see Steve Jones has started to write coherently on the Enduro article. Not.
Anyone make head or tail of it?
I think that a point to note is that plus size tyres aren't DH style tyres with draggy compounds and sidewalls so fitting big tyres to 26" wheels and sticking them in a 650b frame isn't necessarily the same sort of thing as what most of us on plus sizes are experiencing.
I'm seemingly no slower on climbs and non technical flat stuff on b+ wheels compared to 29er ones. That's definitely not the case if you use DH tyres
That does look like fun Bruce!
My latest 27+ build - new Swift happy to run either 29x~2.5" or up to 27.5x3.25"

Just some slight tweaks to give ample clearance all around B+ tyres but it's basically the same as the last version of Swift which was designed solely for 29" tyres with lots of clearance and able to run 29+ up front. Another of the benefits of the EBB is that it can be used to adjust for small changes in wheel diameter.
Agree with Nemesis that most of the + size stuff leans towards the fast rolling end of the spectrum - but no reason 24+ couldn't have its own advantages on the right bike.
what i'm after are some big 26 tyres.
i've been on 2.4/2.35 schwalbe for ages but where i live with very rough surfaced trails, even bigger has always made sense to me. i've a bit to spare either side in my new frame, but dirt wizards would probably be pushing it, and anyway surly reccommend a 50mm rim or something.
anyone know of any say 26 x 2.6" tyres? is it just too hopeful to wish that some may get made eventually?
I'd say you'll have a very long wait.
Jamiesilo - 26" dirt wizards are 2.75's and don't need such a wide rim. My mate is running them on spank oozy rims on his Surly 1x1. You may well be ok but it's an expensive gamble to find out.
aye, i figured too scotroutes.
but yep, may be worth a gamble with a dirt wizard, my rims are stans flows so something like 29mm i think..
more likely to be a tight fit in the forks. i reckon they're recent enough for Rockshox to have decided to bring the vertical clearance down to as small as possible so folk can't stick 27.5 wheels in. it's tiny anyway.
min rim width in fact 35mm for dirt wizard. that's not too far off then
