I have increased the frequency, length and intensity of my rides recently and I now feel completely drained all of the time. I tried the drinking milk immediately after riding tip and that seems to help for the first few hours but then I feel real wiped out again. What other recovery tricks are there? My eating shed loads doesn't seem to work.

you just need to give your body time to adapt

Firstly disconnect exercise and diet. You need a good balanced diet but you can't out exercise a poor diet. You can gain some recovery speed by eating in the 45mins after exercise. You maybe dehydrated during your exercise, drink more and fuel during exercise. As you get fitter you will need less. Body needs time to adapt. Hard weeks followed by easy weeks repeat. Don't over compensate with food. On intensity. Remember there is a difference between training and smashing oneself. The former is recommended. Aim for quality and quantity will follow. Along the way you will learn what works for you. Don't expect quick changes.Good luck

Amateur cyclists who have achieved a good level of athletic fitness tend not to appreciate what a drain a hard ride places on the body's resources. They carry on eating as before when professionals are scoffing 8000 calories a day.

Last year I bumped into a German doctor cyclist from Preston, sitting outside the cafe in Chipping; he was tucking into a plate of FIVE fried aggs. I think he has the right idea.

And last week my neighbour who is tall, slim and looks fit, came out for his first ever road bike ride on my spare bike. We cruised around a 2.5 miles local circuit with about 300 feet of climb and when we got home he had to sit down for ten minute as he felt so sick and dizzy from the effort. I've assured him it will get easier and today he bought himelf a ridiculously cheap bike from Decathlon, alloy with a carbon fork with £30 off because of a scratch on the frame.
