Can anyone suggest some good winter SPD shoes/boots that work with combination pedals and don't cost more than the national debt?
Northwave Celsius GTX.
Edit - Combination pedals?

these.
i have searched for 4 years for a boot that works with a fused foot, that is cold most of the time because or the metal in it.
tried what is supposed to be the best boot, wolvehammers. they insulated a cold foot and made it colder.
these northwave enduros are ace. wide, work with a flat or spd. and the mesh is covered on the inside, to keep water out.
Is that UK winter? What sort of expected temperatures?
I've a pair of Specialized Defrosters which are fine for SPDs but not flats as the rubber compound is too hard. Good to -3/4C or so
My wife has a pair of 45Nrth Japanthers which are a bit better temperature wise and possibly better with flats but I don't think she's tried to use them as such. Now replaced with the Ragnarok. She's also got a set of Wolvhammers which are good to around -20C and which play better with flats.
In true Singletrack style I'd recommend the Mavic H2O boots, as I have them, been fabulous for me, but feet are a very personal thing so I'd definitely try before buying as I wear a 44 normal shoe, 45 spd normally (Specialized / Shimano) but a 46 Mavic :/
Have ridden for 5 hours without waterproof socks and short with no feet based swimming poolage or dampness so on that basis dang good.
Cost £100 ish but have been mega for cold, wet, etc so bring it on. I've even worn them through summer without spontaneously combusting (as I had to) but will look for some summer kecks soon.

I use Bontrager Old Man Winters when it's proper cold. They take an SPD but I always cycle on plastic, flat pedals in cold conditions rather than having my foot connected to a heat sink.
Edit – Combination pedals?
Like these;

I still want the pedal to grip if I haven't clipped in.
@ton I've been looking at the Northwave Enduros for a while now. How are they on flats? Is the cleat recessed?
Dunno if it helps but use my normal spd shoes that I use on dual pedals, neoprene overshoe, and seal up the leaky bottom bit by the cleats with silicone sealant, Shoes lined with tin foil , or some cracking insoles i got last year, if shoe big enough
You can’t go wrong with a pair of Shimano winter boots. They are warmer than a lot of the other brands and cheaper, too.

yes mate, it is recessed. they work with dmr v12 flats. and also spd padals, I use xt spds.

Rinse and repeat....
Ive got some of the Shiamano MW7's (new goretex ones). I've been wearing them the last month or so and they are very comfy and warm, a bit too warm at the moment. Last night was good though as it got bloomin cold on the hills and my feet were toasty.
They work with caged pedals as well and the rubber is pretty grippy on wet roots! DONT SIZE UP, they are already very roomy.
I picked up a pair of the Shimano MW7 (700?) from a Sportpursuit PSA off of here. They work well with the Horizons above, and Shimano M530's, they are nice and warm alright.
Waterproof? Kind of. They don't keep everything out (as there's a huge hole to get your foot in) but they stay dry for longer.
However, the biggest issue with them is they take an age to dry out. Hole in the bottom for the cleats won't drain, and the insulation means even on a radiator they stay wet for ages.
I still want the pedal to grip if I haven’t clipped in.
That's not happening regardless of shoe on the horizons, even with the pins as long as they can go.
Lake boots are my favourites so far. Current winter boot of choice is the lake mx145. Already wearing it and my feet aren’t boiling but they will be cosy in winter too

Got to disagree with you there. I've been using the Horizons for 2 years now and have only just changed the pins from shortest to middle length, just to see what difference it makes in the slop. With FiveTen SPD shoes I get plenty of grip when not clipped in.
The MW7 look pretty good, but £150 is more than I was planning on spending.
Lake 303's here, just about worn out after many winters abuse and falling to pieces so just taken delivery of some new 304's.
I've also just bought a shoe and glove drier from amazon that really helps shorten drying times for 5:10's and the Lakes.
Shimano XM7’s. Goretex and waterproof (as much as you can reasonably expect). Less full on than the MW7’s and cheaper
I use them with (Fire-eye) SPD platforms similar to what you’re using as I like to unclip on the sketchier, steeper downhill stuff. Works for me as they’ve got proper soles on the rather than ‘proper’ stiff cycling soles that have you walking you’ve just been hoofed in the slats

The 304's look pretty good.. are they much heavier than the 303's?
I use Northwave Celsius which have been fabulous, but the biggest improvement to my winter riding was a tip from Ton to make sure your boots are big enough to allow you to wiggle/move your feet about inside your boot. That single thing has made the most difference to my winter riding.
Bit of an update, got the Lake cleat position rubber blocks fit to my Lake 303's to try on my Burgtec flats.
It worked, sort of, I found my feet would migrate across the pedal and eventually stop with about 1/3 of the width of my foot hanging off the outer edge of the pedal. So it was rideable but not exactly confidence inspiring. I think if the flat pedal had more pins especially on the centre spindle they may work better however I think I'm going to resort to some new TIME Speciale 8's and go with cleats again.
