After an ouchity sore commuting crash this morning on ice (resulting in a knackered knee…) I’ve decided I NEED new studded tyres. I’ve used Schwalbe Snow Studs the past few winters but they’re past their best and very worn. Looking for something wider. Bike has clearance for 47mm front and 40mm(ish) rear.

Commute is mostly offroad paths, canal paths and tame MTB trail centre. Going to have a bit more tarmacc’d path soon though. No deep mud hence my current tyre choice of Schwalbe Smart Sam 700x47f/40r or Specialized Trigger Sport 700x47f/38r.

I’m looking at:
Schwalbe Marathon Winters (possibly road orientated?)
Schwalbe Winter Spikes (look like a less-spiked version of the Marathon Winters with less spikes on the edges)
Conti Nordic Spikes (very offroad orientated I think?)

Can anyone offer experiences of the above?

Or, any other tyres I should consider?

Thanks.

(bike is fine BTW)

schwalbe winter marathons are ALOT more capible than they look.

ive done the puffer 3 or 4 times on them for lack of anything better that fits my rigid 29er.

Have a winter tyre test. In Swedish. That you can't read as the text is too small.

Don't say I never give you anything

I use marathon winter plus here in the frozen wastes of Scandinavia. Best balance of grip, rolling resist. etc.

Jealous!

Yup, I know! If I knew how to successfully post pics on here I'd make you even more jealous. Ironically, my crash this morning was on a recent new (to me) bit of path that misses off a bit of road, which I thought was the safer option...

Thanks folks. Winter Marathons might be the way to go then. Good to hear they've held up to the Puffer trailrat. And thanks for that HYD, if I squint I can juuuuuuusssst make out the scores.

Nokian. There’s really no substitute.

no substitute except all the other Ice spike and even soft winter compound bicycle tires that are availible......

that said i fitted nokians to the car for winter - not because they are the best but because they were the cheapest recognised brand tire.....

Conti TS860's on my car - didn't skimp there, but being a small/common tyre size the difference between that and Nokian/Falken/etc was small.

In fact, getting close in price to a Schwalbe Winter Marathon tyre...

you aint kidding

i got mine from germany , they were significantly cheaper at the time - and as i needed 4 it was quite a hit.... IIRC i got 4 for price of 2 back then.
