Having worn a hole in the bum of my previous go to "winter" shorts, what's good these days?
Things seem to have moved on from my previous "just wear the thickest pair of DH shorts you can find" plan.
I learned last winter to skip winter shorts and go for winter pants/trousers. I got some 7Mesh Thunderpants and they are a game changer for me. I rode way more, was more comfortable and they mean waterproof socks actually work as water doesn't drip down your leg into them. They are mega expensive (but still hard to get as they sell out very quickly) but they are good. Check out Endura/Altura if you want something not stupid money.
I've just ordered some RAF MVP (Goretex) trousers to be cut down into shorts. So many folk have recommended these over the years, I thought it was worth a try.
Yeah, I'll be using my trousers mostly this winter. But I've also got some reasonably-priced Madison semi-waterproof shorts and they seem decent in terms of cut/ quality etc. Haven't had lots of rides on them so no comment on longevity.
