Had to do a soggy road ride today, and due to a toe problem and thick dressing I couldn’t get my foot comfortable in my Spesh road shoes, which I normally wear, with Time XPRO 10 pedals. So I swopped to my regular MTB/gravel pedals, Time Atac XC4 and Spesh Recon 2 shoes, which have a slightly wider toe box.
I would love to say I noticed a difference, but over a relatively sedate 20 and a bit miles I honestly can’t say I did !
Hmmm, may just leave them on for winter as a lot safer when off the bike 🤪
I've been using ATACs on my winter road bike for years. Mainly because my winter boots are MTB ones. I used to commute on it too and ATACs were slightly better for clipping in/out at all the lights and junctions.
I use Candy's in the winter, with Shimano MW81s.
My normal SPD-SL with my normal Northwave road shoes, warmer socks and overshoes.
Or if the weather is totally shite, zwift.
All my bikes have SPD pedals on year round, so I just have "winter" and "summer" shoes to worry about. The road bikes are on the single sided "touring" pedals but not convinced they offer any more support than double sided SPDs.
Shimano trail pedals with Spesh defrosters or shimano something or other mtb shoes on commuter/winter bike, a lot better for muddy field gateway comfort stops. I can tell the difference on longer rides, but tend to be a bit steadier through the winter months anyway.
Shimano m520/540 spd pedals and a pair of Shimano MW7 winter boots
Pedals shed mud really well, boots keep me toasty warm and have great grip off the bike
Tend to find you spend more time on your feet cycling in winter - stopping for punctures/mechanicals, visits to cafes so makes sense to wear something suitable. I have 45Nrth boots which are warm and waterproof. Use Time pedals for my CX,gravel,MTB and fat bikes.
Good feedback, thanks, will leave them on till Spring I think.
@dovebiker - which 45Nth boots have you got and how are they lasting? I'm tempted but they are a bit steep.
