I ride through the winter, mostly commuting, but also longer weekend rides in the south east. I am totally happy with my ride kit down to about -5 degrees. Monday morning through Bushy Park showed as -4 and I was fine with just a bit of cold in the ends of my fingers. Core fine and feet fine with just some toe covers.
Last night I was surprised when I left work around 5:30pm that it was snowing. Journey home not fun, and because my gloves got wet they quickly got cold and I lost all feeling in my fingers.
The gloves I use at the moment are Sportful Sotto Zero sometimes with a merino liner, which work great in the dry. I'm not looking at trying to keep the same (or better) winter insulation but add waterproofing so I don't experience the same surprise again.
I've read loads of reviews, but real life comments on websites from people who've bought examples vary so much I don't think I can rely on them.
I think I've boiled it down to two gloves (ignoring stupid priced brands). These are the Gore Wear C5 Gore-Tex Thermo and Endura Pro SL Primaloft Waterproof.
Does anyone have experience of either of these, or another I should consider. I'm happy to add a liner occasionally although I'm dubious of the benefit, I think good air circulation insider the glove is more important.
I know you lot will give me some real life experience so please put me out of my misery.
As an aside, if anyone can recommend a warm waterproof sock that doesn't feel like cardboard I'd be interested in that too.
Thanks in advance for any contributions.

Maybe look at mountaineering gloves - I picked up several pairs of Black Diamond gloves in a sale a few years ago.

There's also a recent fairly long thread on winter gloves that might be worth reading.

Merino liners inside some sealskin large waterproof gloves. Rode for two hours in snow yesterday with warm, even hot, hands. Fabulous things. Make sure you size up the outer gloves to avoid compression or you will get cold fingers.

Is this with or without overshoes?

A friend had this issue on their commute last night. Their short term solution was to stop at the nearest petrol station and take a pair of gloves from a pump and Wear them with their cold sodden ones.

Pogies

Are the £24.60 classics OK? I'm tempted to try a pair for the rare occasions it is that cold here in the SE.

I've got the basic pogies (around £20 when I bought them). I've been riding with a summer full finger glove and been fine in temperatures around 0 degrees. They look awful but work really well. For colder temperatures I use a thicker glove but it's nice having the finger dexterity so I try to avoid it if I can plus it can get a bit sweaty at times!

I've been using the lobster style specialized ones in the cold weather. Planet X have some cheaper versions.

other than that I have a mix of Sealskins and Lidl/Aldi winter gloves. But the Specialized are the toastiest. Failing that - get some silk ski glove liners.

Perfect. I've been using them for 4-5 years now.

Perfect.

Not always - my trike has vertical grips with reverse mounted brakes 😉

I also have about five pairs of gloves ranging from very thin windproof, to dakine light, to Gore Windstopper heavy and the Sealskins for serious cold and wet. The Gore gloves are not so good and useless when wet. I had silk liners that worked but wore out. The merino liners are thicker so needed a slightly larger outer glove.

I will find out how perfect they are for me when they arrive. Only hitch may be my Pinion gripshift with forward cable exit. I don't like bulky gloves so want these to work

Pogies are my favourite solution for this on my MTB

Can't bring myself to use pogies on my road/commuter

Got a pair of Eigo Lobsters from SportPursuit for £13 - very pleased with them - it was raining yesterday and no wet got through - not sure how they'd be in a proper downpour, but they'd handle snow ok. Did need a pair of undergloves this morning as it was a few deg below, but they were still comfortable. Just one negative - the reflective strips are right on the snot wipe and are not very gentle on the nose!
Oh, they do still have black for £13. Bargin.

Anyone who has mentioned Sealskinz can you say which model exactly. Their website shows several waterproof models so which are people referring to.

I've literally just order a pair of the Galibier deep winter gloves. My two pairs of aldi gloves are both ripped/holed now from commuting use

These are the Sealskins ones I use for the bulk of winter riding.

Mine are the All Season Sealskinz. Not bike specific. They are great and the merino liners make them perfect. Hot hands riding in sleet and snow. And I have awful circulation with Raynaulds in both hands. Takes about 25 minutes to stop stinging when I’m wearing the wrong gloves.

Someone laying on the previous threads a bit heavy there. An earlier single reference was enough to make me go back and search, such a waste of cheap internet storage.

Maybe also a point about how links to threads display.. ? I think that one was well made.
