I need an mtb top for riding in these now slightly cooler and getting colder conditions.
For the road I have a Gore Windstopper top, but I find it too hot on the road bike unless it’s zero conditions
I think I want something with wind blocking on the front and normal jersey on the back, a bit like this
The other thing I’ve found is this, but already it looks more like a jacket and too hot

Any other ideas ?

Cant help on the windproof top but I'm currently using a long sleeve merino top with an Endura Humvee gilet....windproof front with a mesh back. Then a buff as well. If I get hot, both are small enough to shove in the rear pockets of my shorts or they go in the pack if Im wearing one. Works well for me
I use a very lightweight pertex shell over whatever. Can’t imagine a wind proof shirt being neither too hot when the wind drops and I’m climbing in a sheltered spot, nor too cold when I’m exposed.
Rapha do one that looks like a standard mtb jersey.
However, as above, what you want is a gilet. Loads of options and generally pretty cheap. Also very versatile in that they’re easy to take off and put in your pack if you’re still too hot.
Rapha do a Jersey with a windproof front panel, I have one and really like it.

The Galibier GrandTour jacket is excellent and what I'll be wearing today on my mtb ride.
Buy up a size as it's a bit roadie snug.
I also rate my Ground Effect Frosty Boy.
T-shirt below 10C and long-sleeves as it gets colder.

PS: I have the Fat Lad at the Back windproof top but have never really worn it. The cut is ridiculously short,
Alpinestars have the Nevada jerseys with a windproof panel £24 at sportspursuit. In small to XX large

Galibier also do a base layer with a windproof front which makes a normal jersey a fair bit warmer. It doesn't have much give in the front panel so check the sizing, and that also means the neck hole can be a bit of a squeeze but once it's on its toasty.

I’ve got a couple of Rapha one that I picked up in one of there sales. I don’t know if Gore still do them but I have got an under vest that just has a windproof front panel and isn’t thermal.
I also have the Rapha and like it. p20 has the 7mesh version (though I’m not sure they still make it). I am a big gilet wearer but I like the simplicity for a mtb ride.
I have a couple of Ground Effect Baked Alaska's. Great tops, really good quality, I have quite a few Ground Effect items and none have failed, one very old top is a bit threadbare now but I must've had it about 15 years... It has back pockets too so you can stuff a gilet or windproof in if needed.
I've got an Endura 'windproof at front, jersey at rear' and it's brilliant in cooler conditions. It really does help vent sweat and excess heat, drop the front zip and it really does so.
As soon as I'm in single figures for temperatures I'm back in a lighter Pertex jacket and long sleeve base layer below. It's more flexible being able to take off or add layer so can go into warmer or colder than the 'one jacket' Endura.
I do own two riding jerseys which are wind pro on the front only. But, as others have said, nowadays I take a gilet with me. My Decathalong gilet cost under £30, and weighs nothing if I want to stow it. But gilets breathe better than anything else I’ve tried, because they have a mesh back and no arms.
Thanks for the advice , I’ve gone for the rapha on offer as it looks the ideal balance
I’ve got other options for colder weather riding
I've one of these and it fits your description to a tee (mines in stealth black).

You still need to wear a base layer under when it's cold but the chest and upper arms material does a good job to keeping the wind off.
For those wind and light rain days I use a cheap small packable decathlon rain coat.
It's tiny, cheap, not really waterproof but just enough to happily live in a back pocket for when needed.
I also have a decathlon gilet for similar use
Just a quick note on my experience of a long sleeve Rapha mtb jersey, not the exact one in the link above but looks similar.
They're quite fitted, the look and build of the jersey is top notch. But it was fragile and I've found it a bit sweaty in the summer and had zero wind blocking abilities. The warranty is superb though, and they provide free repairs. I tore the arm of mine and sent it away to get repaired but they said it was too damaged and returned my jersey along with a voucher for about £20 from memory.
What about a thin windproof gilet?
Easy to put in a pocket when not in use.
Jacket too hot? Sleeveless for the win
Gilet too hot, unzip it or take it off
I’ve got a Mons Royale one my wife bought me for my birthday, it’s my favourite top for cooler / damp weather.
It might be this one but a slightly different colour https://www.exxpozed.co.uk/herren-shirts-mons-royale-m-tarn-merino-shift-wind-jersey-walnut-black-23a?srsltid=AfmBOorGoBFl4tN1FwaLGyeLOdorYRRXVlhjb9yIsXYhDNe4-tWFMCFO

7mesh compound jersey is great with a wind proof front and shoulders. They have been discontinued, but were on that website that sells overstock sports gear at great discounts. I’m not being g cryptic , really can’t recall the name.
Rapha one is great and loads of them reduced 60% on SportPursuit
