Visiting a mate in the area at the weekend and the surf forecast is rubbish. He fancies rekindling a love of riding, but he's by his own admission not a super fit cardio person. So we're looking for winch and plummet/bike parky type stuff in the area - is there anything within an hour or so? Or should I just take skateboard and pump track bikes?

Ta!

I’m in east Devon but sometimes in that area but I think it’s known for being a mountain biking blank spot. I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong!

Thanks dude, that kinda confirms what a lot of googling has lead me to!

The Minehead area is probably your best option (Horner Woods & Hopcott Woods)...  A bit further away than an hour, but some great riding to be had.

Theres some stuff in some woods near Illfracombe (EDIT: just checked - Lee Woods just inland from Lee village) I think but as above, its a dead spot for biking. Just over an hour away is Haldon near Exeter - worth a go?

Take pump track bikes - theres one in Braunton. Not been but looks good - swing a left at the roundabout as you enter the village towards Tesco/Saltrock. Tiny skate park in Braunton too behind the surf museum (just a bowl really).

Something tells me Barnstaple has a good BMX track but might be wrong... Alternatively just go for a gentle pedal from Bideford onto the old railway line and either head inland or around the coast to Fremington etc for cake.

I'm an ex-native of Bideford and there's nothing I can think of.
It does have a BMX track but something tells me it's fenced off these days (elf & safety no doubt!)
When I was a lad we used to go to the top of the Tors above Westward Ho! and ride down the various footpaths, also frowned upon these days I'd imagine!

There are a couple of shops in Barnstaple and one in Bideford that will know where to ride if there is anywhere.

Thanks everyone! Looks like Dunkery and Horner woods could be a goer!

Some of this stuff looks ok

Great riding in the woods near Minehead 😎

Bear in mind that even though it's only 45ish miles between Bideford and Minehead, driving across Exmoor can be pretty slow going. I'd plan for at least 1h30.
