Building a 24" downhill bike for my son but the old long cage XT rear derailleur is really big in relation to the wheel size and I can see all sort of potential mechanical issues. Was thinking about getting a cheapish short cage road derailleur to fit instead as crc dont seem to have much in the way of mountain bike ones. Would the combination work?

pretty sure the rear will be ok (and think that's all you're looking at)

are you sure a road mech can cope with the cassette/rings you're using ?
