Trying to sort out a bike for a friend out of old bits and bobs. Everything working well other than the rear shifting, which I can't seem to get working smoothly.
Now gears are never my strong point but I can usually get them working pretty well, but not this time round. Trouble is the bike is getting made up of old parts, and unfortunately I realised I didn't have a spare mtb rear mech.
So I've tried to bodge a tiagra 9 speed 4500 rd, together with a 11-36 cassette and 9 speed slx shifter. Reversing the b screw has helped, but am i wasting my time with this combo and do I need a new rear mech?
Or is a visit to the bike shop for proper set up going to sort my woes...

Is the 11-36 cassette a 9 speed? It sounds like a more common size for a 10 speed cassette.
Tiagra mech wont work with SLX shifters. The road and mtb stuff in Shimano have different cable pull ratios.

For 10 speed you are correct but 9 speed road/mtb is the same.
Bollocks.
Cable pull is the same on road and mtb REAR up to 9 speed.
Tiagra rr mech rated to 32T only tho IIRC
