Excuse if this is a newb kinda question but been toying with the idea of moving my 180mm front disc and caliper mount onto the back to replace the current 160mm disc, and putting a 203 on the front. Is there any reason the existing fork adapter wouldn't work on the rear of the frame? Bike is a 2020 Trek Roscoe 7 hardtail. Thanks in advance

Will the frame take a 180 rear? Many won’t iirc

Double check the adaptor, as a front 180 one is the same as a rear 160.

Is it an IS to PM adaptor, or are the frame and forks PM (I would assume they are being 2020)?

If they're PM, then you'll need a +20mm adaptor to get it to fit a 180mm rotor on the rear.

It can be a bit of a minefield!

IF there's clearance and it's post mount then getting an adapter (assuming anyone has any stock!) shouldn't be too complicated. 180 front = 160 rear as above so you will need two new adapters.

203/180 on a 120mm forked trail hardtail is a lot unless you're riding somewhere that regularly cooks brakes.

You haven't said why you want to do it - is it stopping power or overheating or something else?

Looking at pics of the bike online, it looks like both the frame and fork are 160PM so it should swap over, however it may be a problem getting an Allen key into the rear triangle to tighten the bolts. I'd try it first before spending money on the 203 rotor and adapter for the front.

If it were me, I'd got for the 8" front rotor anyway. That will leave you with a 7" rotor and adapter that you can try on the back. If it fits, great. If not, you have a spare front rotor in case you bend the new one. I personally like a 8" front/6" rear combination, but I don't ride in the alps and don't have problems burning out the rear brakes.

It's purely for extra stopping power. I was originally just going to upgrade the front but then got curious about the rear
