Oh. Well can anyone recommend a good but cheapish chain device that will mount on bottom bracket?

Pick any two (buying new). Superstar's plasma no longer comes in BB mount.
I would look out for a secondhand bb mount MRP G2, MRP Lopez or E.13 TRS / LG1 Trail

Those adapters don't work with many frames with dropped chainstays e.g. vpp, maestro as they collide with the rotation.
