I want to build a gravel bike but need to keep it wallet friendly. I have a 29er 'spares' bike that has accumulated unused mtb parts, including some Hope Pro 2s on Stans Flow EX rims.

These are nice wheels, and I am wondering whether I could use them on a gravel bike (accepting they are probably burlier than I really need)? They are 29.1mm outside diameter which seems quite wide, so I'm not sure what that will do to tyre shape/choice, and indeed frame choice. Will something like a 40c run on them without issues?

All guidance appreciated!

I noticed that DT had been testing gravel rimmage, and have decided on 24mm inner/ 28mm outer for their two Gravel rims G540 and G531 - for tyres 'upto' 53mm/ 2.1 in 29 flavour (not just for 650b conversions).

It seems your old Flow's are now bang on trend and those years you spent thrashing down mountains and getting air were entirely mispent, and they were only really suitable for gravel mincing! Just keep to the bigger gravel tyres.

Interestingly your Stand Flow EX are about the same weight as those DT Gravel rims (circa 550g).

This is all very interesting and encouraging, thank you both. If I am on trend however, it will be the first time ever.

Now to find a frame with suitable clearance!

CRC have NS Rag+ framesets for £509.. I run mine with normal MTB wheels (100x15 and 142x12 axles) in both 700x43 (Gravelking SK) and 27.5x2.1 (Maxxis Crossmark II).

If you hang on they might drop further for Black Friday etc. but they might be gone by then..

I’m running pro2 evo on WTB KOM with 25mm internal width, same size as the OEM ones, no problem running 42mm tires.

Thank you, looks like a good option. The new Sonder Camino Al might just have it on price and colour though.. https://www.alpkit.com/sonder/bikes/sonder-camino-al-frame-and-fork1

The Sonder Camino is a nice frame, I may be wrong but those new frames you have linked to look like they are now made for Flat mount brake calipers, just with you saying you were using your "Spares" bike.
