Hi i was riding through a field earlier when i sprung a pretty big rock from the front wheel and it hit underneath part of my five frame.

Obviously this is nothing new to myself of mountain bikers but this rock was a pretty big size i coudl feel the vibration through the bars and has put a fair size chip in the frame.

Will the frame be okay or could this lead to a crack maybe etc. Frame is aluminum.

Also is there anything i can do to improve the appearance of the damage as im worried it may effect the value.

Ive put photos below

Viking tape/invisframe kit and a rock guard or an old bit of tyre zipped to the down tube all help.

Doesn't look to be anything to be concerned about.
Looks to be just a paint chip just the same as you will have over the rest of the frame.

Yeah i think it was the size of the rock and the connection it made that panicked me a bit.

Your photos are all out of focus, too close!

Looks like a tiny chip...if you are worried about retaining value, mountain biking might not be for you!

Ride it and cherish the chips (and dents and scratches) 🙂

Nothing to fear there. That’s not damage, that’s ‘character’.

has put a fair size chip in the frame

Unless the pictures are deceiving that looks absolutely tiny 😆 Most people wouldn't even look twice at a chip in the paint like that when buying a bike 😉

I was going to be mean spirited and sarcastic.

I'd wait until there is a crack before you start worrying.I like your enthusiasm and pre-worrying will get you a head start if the need to worry arises .But can lead to worry fatigue.Which may reduce the effectiveness of your worrying when the time comes.

Maybe you could try a warranty claim.
Looks pretty savage damage to me.
Were you riding in Utah yesterday?

😆

Yep, as above, it'll be fine. No worries about rust with Alu, if you really want to pretty it back in, then a dot of car paint stick from Halfords or Tamiya model paint etc should sort it. It'll take (much) longer to work out what the colour code should be than to spot the paint repair. Out of sight places like dropouts are good places to dot any paint to check colour if you're not sure before you stick it on the downtube! 🙂

Of course if on the next ride the frame splits in half you can sue every one else on this thread.

Thanks for the useful reply 😀 yeah actually i would ld like to tidy it just a little as it can be seen a little bit from the side Of the frame as it it hit right on the corner.

Yeah i did look up touch up paint on orange website but they don't do it.

Just to clarify how would i work out the paint code? And thanks for your rwlt very useful :p

Yeah it was just a big rock and i just wanted reassurance as it was a expensive bike and i have no warranty.Sometimes people on here spot things i don't and know more about aluminum density etc.
