I have just been given a old specialized allez road bike which has old triple 9 speed 105 on it. So i was thinking of putting flat bars on it and using it for work so i was wondering if 9 speed mtb shifters would work.

yes for the rear no for the front. You could go 1x9 39or42 is a good option on C-ring.

you can buy road flat shifters though.

Thanks for the link thomthumb. I will see which is the cheaper option changing the front mech or paying a bit extra for road shifters.

Check if an mtb front mech is big enough to cover the chainring sizes on the Allez to allow it to shift between rings.
Does an mtb front mech work on a 50T or larger chainring down to something like a 34/36?
