Am after some reassurance please!

Am 5'9" and have a 15.5", I believe MK1, on the way.

Am after an allround sort of bike. I like XC occasionally but also like building jumps...and some of my landings can be on the sketchy side.

Was riding a steel dirt jump frame but found it a bit of a dog climbing and XC.

It was either an Alpine or a 456.

Am planning on running 130 Bombers and an 80mm stem. Perhaps I could put lighter wheels on for XC?

Will my bike build be worth the effort?

What is the Singletrack consensus??

Cheers!

Quite likely, but with a 60mm stem.

I'm about your height and had a 15.5" Alpine. Yes I loved it, beautiful bike but just felt a little to small. I'd try with the 80mm stem first with a view to resorting to 50mm.

I had one for about a year and it's a hoot. I'm just under 6ft and still had the 15.5" version. It was a bit too small for me to be honest, but it was still a hoot to ride. 130mm forks will work just fine and you're brief for it to be an all round bike will be very well met.

What colour did you get?

I've got a 17" Mk 1 which has old 150mm Marzocchi Z1s on the front and big Hope M4 brakes so it not exactly light. Its got a 70mm stem on it and does XC very well. I do long rides on it locally on the North Downs and elsewhere in the UK plus its had a couple of outings to the Alps so can't imagine you would have a problem with yours however you build it up. I have toyed with the idea of putting a lighter shorter fork on mine but the cost to save a pound or so in weight really doesn't seem worth it.

Seems as though people have had all sizes and enjoyed them. Thanks for that! 🙂

Geetee- it is a scratched grey colour...soon to be scratched further!

Am hankering after simpler days when I just had a Zaskar and rode everything...the Zaskar just had a 'ride me' look about it. I reckon the Alpines look equally funky!

What have been your best times on your Alpines??

For me, the best times have been finding a bike that seems capable of getting me down stuff that I have baulked at before. If I am looking to ride somewhere I haven't ridden before it's the bike I take as it just seems so secure and planted, I feel happier pushing the envelope. It is also a bike that just wants to be mucked around on, and brings a smile to my face every time I ride it. It makes me feel like a kid again - not bad at my advanced age!!!

Emphatically YES! ( Do I sound a little over-enthusiastic?...)
It's a fantastic frame.
I went from a Charge Blender to a PA and it was the best thing I could have done.

I ride xc on mine, downhill tracks like Antur Stiniog etc, jumping at Woburn, 4x and pump tracks... Brilliant.
I have 140mm Pikes, a 50mm stem and wide bars and 1x9 gearing and its spot on.

You'll love it. 🙂

^^^ different frame.

But yes, Alpine's are fantastic frames for doing everything. Took mine to the alps a couple of times with a set of pikes on the front, it was great fun.

yes, yes you will.

I owned an 18" MkII for a couple of years as my "do everything" favourite bike.

eventually replaced with a Prince Albert Classic, just as good for my riding and what i had always yearned for.

big DB Alpine fan here.... 🙂

i'd say that a 15.5" frame (yup, MK1) might feel a bit camped if it's a 21" top tube.

i'm 5'7" and at first found my 15.5"/21" a little too small. it was fine descending, but i felt squashed when climbing. i got used to it after a while, but was seriously considering selling it.

i've now got a MK2 which is a touch longer at 16" and it feels much better... not as cramped.

i'm also not sure that you will get the most out of the frame unless you are riding either fairly techy or rough trails. i don't think the frame comes alive until you are really pushing it, otherwise it feels rather dull in comparison to thinner tubed steel frames.

for steep technical riding it is brilliant, IMO.
