I replace the battery for my light with some ebay ones.
Basically I've got an older Serfas True 1500+ light (which i think i won from the tuesday treats on here actually). The battery has given up the ghost now. it's in a really nice case and i was wondering if i'd be able to get some battery cells with the same ratings (Lithium Ion 7.4U 4600MAH) and just open it up and swap them round.
What's the consensus, will it just explode?
You might not die but things might go rather wrong. It really depends on a few factors I would say.
How the cells are installed in the light
If they have any protection circuit on the cells themselves or some kind of 'custom' circuit on the cell pack.
Quality of the cells you might replace with (these can vary enormously) and all I would say is really cheap is best avoided.
Overall I would say think twice unless you really really know what you are doing or its a really simple unplug old/plug in new and these things can easily catch fire or explode. Ideally buy a new pack from Serfas if they do one.
MTB Batteries will probably remake it for you (safely)
They will just be cells, but you need to connect the BMS up correctly.
If you are good at soldering...take the existing pack apart and see how it's built
My lumi has had a new set of cells, although my soldering is naff so a friend did it for me
MTB batteries is a good call. i'll give them a go. not heard of them before
