My 4 inch tyres are OK, I use fasty straps instead of the plastic ones though

IIRC, there's a chubby option (straps and bases) available.

I don't think the standard straps will fit around a tyre of that diameter

Is a good rack though so any other mount as above or voile straps should work great

I use a Thule 591 with the standard straps and it fits a Maxxis rekon 2.8 with a 40mm rim. There is a bit of space left but as above you can get longer straps if length is an issue

Isn’t the alloy extrusion profile the same for 591 & 598 though, so the fat tyre trays should fit a 591?

I found the standard straps on a 591 barely coped with 2.8x27.5

I did try cam straps for 4.0x26 and it was OK until the first really windy day on the A1 and after the bike tried to lunch my roof for the third time I gave up and dismantled it in the rain at the roadside so I could fit it around the stuff already inside the car. I couldn't recommend this to anyone after that drive. I know 591's are good for stupid weather and 'higher speeds' with bikes that are inside the design size so it's the home-brew mod that was to blame rather than the carrier. The 4.0's were physically too wide to sit in the trays was the root of the issue I think. I know some do make replacement trays out of drainpipe.

Now the 598 is the same sort of money 591's were a couple of years ago it hardly seems worth it tbh. Officially the 598 fat trays aren't meant to be compatible with the 591 so I'd want to see that working before committing personally.

They don't fit. Profile of aluminium is different.

598 is better anyway - longer for slacker frames, better clamp and torque knob. More robust.

Sorry Winston, but I'm going to have to disagree as i've done it, the fat tyre adapters do fit 591 perfectly, yes they're a tight fit, i used rubber faced mallet first time but they work fine then for up to 4.8" I have in mine.

Last time I looked 591's were well under £100 and 598's were hovering around the £125 mark. £180 is close to RRP i think. Is this just a seasonal thing? Seems much too large a fluctuation to be exchange rate based.

Just had a quick look.

Roofracks.co have 598's at £89.99 each if you're buying a pair.

Wiggle have them at £82 but are currently sold out - and say list is currently £129.99.

If you're being asked £180 for one I'd look a bit further...

@fatbikeandcoffee

You used a mallet.

My colleague also did that and after a few journeys the plastic split.

As I said, the profile is different. You can bodge it and risk breakage, possibly at motorway speeds or you can pay a few quid extra and have something properly designed for the job and legal.

@winston +1

598s and the wider trays is the way to go.

I've carried my fattie on three 598, I just slid the trays out the way and lashed each wheel on with a long strap wrapped around about 3 or 4 times.

Was solid and worked well but was a bit of a faff compared to the usual 30 seconds it takes to do the proper straps up.

As a total aside, I never cease to be amazed how many people there are driving around with Thule wingbars backwards on their car.

I carry mine & my lads fatties on 591's but use some 10mm bungee cords to secure them.

591 will not fit my XL slack fattie - maybe the 598 would be better if thule have woken up to the slack/long trend

The standard wheel trays on the 598 fit my Chronicle on a 40int rim.

I bought the fat adapters for the Dune though. I was strapping which worked but was a pain.

My neighbor is afflicted by this. Never worked out how to tell him without sounding like a prick.

Apart from aesthetics it makes no difference anyway.
