I am in the unfortunate but self inflicted situation where my Commencal HT frame doesn't lend itself well to my set up of Zee rear mech and 11-36 XT cassette on a x1 32t. The chain is very loose at one end and very tense at the other end - it kind of works (whenever I finally get the indexing right with the help of a new cable hopefully).

Will the Goat link make a difference ? Does it even fit to a ZEE rear mech ?

I appreciate that buying a SLX mid cage is another solution but I kind of like the ZEE.

Thanks a lot.

Nick

I'd have thought (though I have no actual experience of them) that the Goat Link only moves the derailleur mounting point, it doesn't help much with respect to chain length.

The One Up RAD Cage nearly achieves what you're after - it moves the top jockey wheel downwards when the cage is extended forward, so means the distance from the jockey wheel to the cassette is better throughout the range.

Really though, I'm surprised you're having problems with this at all. A friend is managing a short cage zee on a 11-42t cassette, which suggests something isn't right on yours...

Have you tried adjusting the B-screw to get a small amount of clearance in the biggest sprocket?

Can you send any photos from the side to show the mech angle and position? I'm thinking of the Productions Privee (Shan?) that had an incorrect shaped dropout leaving the mech at a funny angle.

Thanks. I am also very surprised by the outcome and disappointed that a compatible Shimano product is actually not compatible. I am not too good with what the screws do tbh and I had tried to mount the mech another way which made it worse. The reputable LBS never really tried that hard to tweak/fine tune and find a solution as they kept saying the Zee is a downhill mech.
I have lost faith in LBS in general too as I can't find one who even want to listen properly and use any critical thinking.

There's a close ratio zee and a wide ratio zee. Which one is yours?

Mine is a wide ratio, could that be the problem ?

Looks... ok form that angle?

Does it work any differently with the clutch moved to the off position?

It should work, though I'm not familiar with the close ratio version that Yak mentions. Can you find out, maybe see if you can find the part/model number?

/edit - the wide ratio zee is what you'd want.

No - should work then. The close ratio the DH one.
Side on photos with the chain on both the biggest and smallest cog would help here.

I have a wide ratio Zee on a 40t working fine with a Goatlink. You shouldn't need one with a 36. I think your b tension needs adjusting.

Hello again - I have decided to go for a Sunrace 11-40 and to change the rear mech - if I don't want to use a goatling, which 10-speed rear mech will work :

Shimano SLX M7000 SLX 10-speeed SGS
or
Shimano SLX RD-M670-D SGS Shadow
or
neither ?

Thx

n

I doubt either can be guaranteed to - you need to get lucky with the mech mounting position/angle for 10 speed mechs to handle a 40t sprocket.

I have an XT long cage Shadow+ (I think the + means a clutch, but I stand to be corrected...) that works well with a Sunrace 11-42t 10 speed cassette. Frame is a 2014 Stumpjumper FSR.

Lucky! SLX 10 speed works with 11-42 on my Banshee Spitfire but not on my Bird Zero AM.

I have also ordered a 25mm B screw to see if it helps pre-new cassette...
Yes it's 10-speed and the Sunrace would remain 10-speed!

I put a Sunrace 11-42 on my T129 with an XT Shadow + GS, (medium cage). IT was fine using the high (big) gears but caused all manner of issues after the the midpoint.

Ended up getting a Goatlink and haven't looked back. £20 well spent.

I have a Deore (M615, longer cage) working with an 11-40 cassette on my HT. A Slightly longer B screw was all that was needed...

Its worth noting that different hanger positions between frames, and the amount of chain grow from the suspension will have an effect on shifting... I doubt a goatlink would hurt.

Looking at that pic, it appears that you've not got the mech mounted properly. The link between the mech and the hanger should be more horizontal than it appears to be in the photo.

Might just be the pic but I'd look at that first.

matthew you're right it's not optimum but the other way of mounting it was even worse ! The solution actually works now form a shifting pov, just a marginal in terms of chain tension at both ends.

I have sold the bike to a friend (I think) but I promised I'd put a 40t or 42t cassette. I am actually tempted to wait for the availability of the new 10-speed Deore M6000 11-42 and the assorted rear mech.

As said above, mech doesn't look like it's fitted properly, as if the wee stopper on the mech isn't located on the hanger "lip". see here
