My teen daughter is away at uni. She rides DH on uplift days mostly. She is missing riding her bike, but doesnt want to take her pride and joy DH bike, and she doesnt have a vehicle to transport it to venues.

She walks to college, but right by her halls is a wooded area with some jumps and berms. Would a cheap SH bmx be suitable for playing in the woods on the jumps?

If so what should i look for? I havnt got much to spend and something that could be used and put away until i can fettle at end of term would be ideal. Am i on the right track here, or would something else be better?

BMX would do and be fun but I think I'd be more tempted to pick up a second hand 26 inch wheel singlespeed dirt jumper that might then also be useful for getting around town on etc too. Get a long enough seatpost and it could be a bit more multi purpose.

We have a fair bit of 26" stuff around, but she didnt want a nice bike as its hard to keep secure...jump bike will be rigid and ss? Anything else? Just a rear brake?

She is quite small 5'3 so what size jump bike should i search for? Do they size like xc bikes?

They mostly come in one size (about 14 inch seatbtube) so would be fine in terms of standover. Top tubes aren't too long and with a short stem would be fine.Specialized p1 come up on eBay a fair bit. One on there for £185 at the moment. Brakes are a personal thing. I always liked both but some run just rear to DJ, rarely just front.

If she is small maybe a 24 inch wheeler like a DMR?

just a thought, you could try a 24 inch dirt jump bike instead. As she is short, this would be in proportion for her. they are easy to move around on, and cheap to buy.

As it stands i have a frame and wheel lying around, but im not suggesting 24 because i want to sell it. Its a serious suggestion. My gf is 5'3 and loves riding my 24 inch bike, as she finds it really easy to throw around.

I'd suggest she goes down and checks what the other riders are riding. It could be groomed BMX trails or rough as ropey jumps. If it is a decent BMX spot they won't be too happy to see someone turn up on an MTB wanting to have a go without doing any digging etc.

Second Steve's post. The riding without digging can be hard and as he says if the. Jumps are a bit copy riding a bmx will be horrible. Bmx needs super nice smooth trails.

Does the uni have a cycling club? Ours had its own secure bike storage in a university garage and if hers has the same she could use that. Or just keep it in her room like I did. The club should also be able to get her to uplift days and maybe even get her into different types of riding.
