Hi all,

I'm going to buy a Surly cog and 9 speed chain, but will the chain ruin my SRAM 12 speed chainring? I'm trying to keep costs down.

Many thanks,
FM

A 9 speed chain is very unlikely to run well with a 12 speed chainring I’d have thought. The chain size is completely different - I think 9 speed runs a wider chain than 11/12 speed.

Thanks Joe. What are my options then? If I run my NX chain with the single speed sprocket, will it wear the chain?

Not true - I believe the internal width of a 9 speed chain is the same as that of a 12-speed. The difference between the two is the external (i.e. total width) of the chain which is clearly narrower on the 12-speed chain. In short, the chainring won't be able to tell the difference between the two!

OK, so a cheapo 9speed chain, the Surly cog and I should be good to go?

Yup. Some useful info here if you are interested: https://bike.bikegremlin.com/1220/1-bicycle-chains-compatibility/
