Will 11sp SLX rear mech work with 12sp cassette and shifter?

In the spares cupboard i have a Shimano M7000-11-GS rear mech.

I how have some more 12 speed parts, will this work with a 12sp shifter and 12sp cassette (all shimano)?

If it will, whats the sweetspot for cost/weight/durability? Is it a wide range slx 12 sp cassette and an xtr chain?

Thanks

Ian

I believe the pull ratios line up and it works the other way round (11s shifter and cassette, 12s mech) so presumably it’s a case of whether the mech will reach across the cassette

I suspect it won't have the range for a 12sp cassette. I know it struggled with a 10-46 11sp cassette when I tried so 12sp is unlikely.

The cable pull ratio should with but Shimano only rate the m7000 rear mech up to 46t max sprocket size.

Take a look at the m5100 rear mech which is widely available for 22.99 at the moment. That's rated to 51t.

When I was building MrsPs bike I got the wrong 12sp xt mech but figured I'd see if her 11sp slx mech would at least let her ride it even if the shifting was a bit ropey. No such problem, it worked fine across the whole cassette - but I think that was an sgs mech so it could deal with the range.

Can you add a wolftooth range extender to get you to the 51 if needed?

I don't think the 11 speed mech will work. 11 will work on 10/11 but I'm sure 12 has a different ratio not just from the shifter?

Thanks all. I will just have 11sp on one bike and 12 on the other!

I am running M7000 SLX and M8000 XT rear mechs, both bikes have the M5100 11-51 cassette. Completely standard, no range extenders or extra long B tension screws and both work faultlessly so as long as the pull ratio is the same you should be alright running the SLX on a 12 speed cassette

I run an M7000 11 speed mech on a 11-50 11 speed cassette as above with no modifications, can't see 12 speed cassette being an issue. Asked the question recently about running a 12 speed mech with 11 speed cassette and shifter and the consensus is that it works fine. Cannot confirm as I haven't fitted it yet...

A small cog with nine rather than 11 teeth might put the mech out of its comfort zone, that's going to be the issue with wide range cassettes 11 vs 12 speed.

Yeah I have slx m7000 mech running fine on 11-51 11 speed deore cassette but shimano 12 speed is 10-51 isn’t it so it’s asking it to do a little more
