The wikipedia entry for 'Mountain Bike' is quite frankly shocking:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_bike

Firstly the images! An 'upgraded' 2006 bighit!? A 2007 Epic!? A 2002. rigid. 21 speed. Trek 800. SPORT! these are the bikes which people should visually associate with mountain biking!!? No wonder people at work don't think I'm cool.

The text stinks even worse of 90s and noughties. Surely someone can do better!? Keeping the popular [s]tire[/s] tyre manufactures list up to date would be a start. I've not seen a Tioga or Nokian tyre in about... 10 years.

Maybe us well informed people of STW could take responsibility for bringing this definition up-to-date.

TBH, it's probably better than the average Wikipedia page.

I've got both

I've got a set of Nokians for the commuter for when it's properly icy.

The well informed people of STW? You mean this bunch???

Truth hurts...

Also there’s not even one mention of £100 Maxxis tyres.

If you don't think it's right then update it yourself. Worth looking at the discussion page as well as many of the points raised in this thread are also raised there.

Writing a piece in an entirely neutral manner is not easy.

The text stinks even worse of 90s and noughties.

TBF people were riding MTBs during this period and although there's been a few incremental changes and a couple of brands have come and gone, not all that much has really changed...

Maybe us well informed people of STW could take responsibility for bringing this definition up-to-date.

What's all this 'us' you're aware that anyone can sign up to contribute info and edit wikipedia, so if it really bothers you the means to change it is entirely within your grasp...

As above. To be honest other than marketing nonsense what a mountain bike is and does is the same as it was 20-30 years ago. Although that Big Hit running a 24" rear wheel, OMG! You probably couldn't even ride it in 2017. The trails certainly wouldn't come alive and the bike isn't 10 foot long so must be so unstable. Also the head angle, I'm guessing you'd be straight over the bars even looking at at downhill slope!

I think maybe there should be an Enduro specific page.

Being constructive, maybe it could do with some basic descriptions of the various niches and disciplines (which has evolved a bit over the years)...

there is a strong ethic of self-reliance in the sport

😆

Will my bars break if I strap my bike upright and what tyres for my wood burning stove equipped van? 😆

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enduro_(mountain_biking)

Something would have to be very obscure for there NOT to be a wikipedia page for it 🙂

hit massive jumps and drops aboard their high tech steeds

Oh dear. I'm sure we could improve on the page, but it would probably turn into a fight.

There's also this page on "mountain biking", bit more comprehensive, and has a picture of at least one bike from the current decade(?)

Chain's a bit long on that Norco, isn't it? Could do with a few links removed, surely.

Nope. The derailleur height is set with the Sram Eagle tool, and the chain length was determined by unhooking the shock with the bike in first gear and cycling the suspension. The chain is as short as it will go with no risk to breaking the derailleur off when hucking to flat in first gear 🙂
